THE SETTING

La Maison Papillons sits in Monteil, a tiny hamlet near Montclus, in the Gard. This is southern France at the meeting point of several landscapes: Occitanie, the Cèze valley, the Ardèche gorges, the Cévennes foothills and the softer edge of Provence further south. The region has limestone cliffs, river swimming, garrigue, cherry orchards, olive trees, caves, prehistoric sites, medieval villages and market towns that still feel properly local.

Montclus is only a few minutes away, listed among the most beautiful villages in France. It drops down towards the Cèze, with stone lanes, old houses and a river that becomes part of summer life here. Barjac, Goudargues, Aiguèze and La Roque-sur-Cèze are all close, each bringing a different version of the Gard: market, canal, gorge, stone bridge, terrace, swim.

La Maison Papillons stands slightly apart from all that, in Monteil, with views over the surrounding hills. Caroline and Olivier found the house in 2012, when it was still an old farm in need of serious work. They spent two years restoring it, then slowly turned it into a guesthouse where art, family life, hospitality and the landscape all seem to belong together.

THE ROOMS

La Maison Papillons has five guest rooms and four independent suites. The original rooms sit within the old stone buildings and keep the farm’s structure close: vaulted ceilings, hayloft volumes, thick walls, stone floors, beams, garden views, courtyard light and simple materials.

The mood is natural and personal. Limewashed walls, old wood, linen, stone, concrete, antique pieces, objects found over time, and furniture made or chosen by Olivier. The rooms feel lived-in in the best sense: calm, textured, unforced.

Some rooms are compact and tucked away. Others have larger volumes, sitting areas, balconies or wide openings towards the courtyard, garden or hills. The independent suites add more privacy, with living areas, kitchens or terraces depending on the category.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served every morning, indoors or outside depending on the season. The table is simple and very much of the house: homemade granola, bread and viennoiseries, organic jams, local goat’s cheese, eggs from the hens, fruit, coffee and a good choice of teas. Caroline often adds something homemade depending on the day.

Table d’hôtes dinners are organised regularly, usually by reservation. The cooking is Mediterranean in spirit, based on local and organic produce when available. A summer kitchen spirit also runs through the property, with the vegetable garden and henhouse adding to the place’s domestic feel.

THE STAY

Life at La Maison Papillons moves between the courtyard, the garden and the pool.

The pool looks out towards the hills, with loungers, shade and the kind of view that makes an afternoon disappear quickly. Around it, the garden has olive trees, corners for reading, places for yoga, pétanque, hammocks and enough space for everyone to find their own distance.

Bikes are available, and Olivier can advise or guide guests on routes through the surrounding countryside. This matters here because the roads are part of the pleasure: garrigue, vineyards, fruit trees, old villages, river stops and long quiet stretches between them.

AROUND LA MAISON PAPILLONS

The first outing should be Montclus. From Monteil, you can walk through vines, orchards, oaks and garrigue down towards the village and the Cèze. In summer, that means a swim in the river, a slow return and probably no need for a bigger plan.

Aven d’Orgnac is only a short drive away and is one of the region’s great cave sites, with impressive underground chambers and a prehistory museum. The Caverne du Pont d’Arc, the replica of Chauvet Cave, is around 25 minutes away and gives access to one of the most important prehistoric art stories in Europe.

The Cèze and Ardèche gorges shape many of the best days here. Canoeing, swimming, walking, viewpoints, limestone cliffs, and small river beaches are all within easy reach.

Barjac is the nearest market town, especially good on Friday morning. Goudargues has canals, shade and restaurants. Aiguèze marks the southern entrance to the Ardèche gorges. La Roque-sur-Cèze and the Cascades du Sautadet make one of the prettiest short outings in the area.

Further away, Uzès, Avignon, the Camargue, the Cévennes and the Bois de Païolive can all become day trips. Still, La Maison Papillons feels strongest when the days stay close to the house, the river and the small roads around Monteil.

THE OWNERS

La Maison Papillons is the home and project of Caroline and Olivier. Before arriving here, they had already restored several houses together. That experience shows. The renovation feels careful but also instinctive: old stones returned to place, materials reused, and lime, wood, concrete, linen, cotton, metal, and handmade pieces all worked into the house.

Caroline brings the ease of someone who knows how to receive people with warmth and tact. Her presence gives the guesthouse much of its rhythm: breakfast, advice, dinners, arrivals, conversation, discretion.

Olivier is a painter and former illustrator. His work is part of the house, along with furniture and objects he has made from old wood found in the surrounding landscape. His studio is attached to the guesthouse, and his eye gives the place its slightly artistic, imperfect, deeply personal character.

Together, they have made La Maison Papillons feel rare because it has not been flattened into a hotel concept. It still feels like a home, a studio, a family place, a garden, a refuge, and a very good reason to take the smaller road.

GOOD TO KNOW

The property has five guest rooms and four independent suites. Some suites include living areas, kitchens or private terraces.

Facilities include a garden, courtyard, swimming pool, pétanque area, terraces, yoga spaces, bike rental, massage on request and table d’hôtes dinners on selected evenings.

Children are accepted from age 8.

The nearest TER station is Alès, around 30 km away. Avignon TGV is around 60 km away. A car is strongly recommended.

Prices vary by room and season, starting from around €150 per night. A two-night minimum usually applies.
