THE SETTING

Masseria Macchiaforte sits outside Gallipoli, along the road that slips from town into countryside. The sea is close, the Mediterranean scrub is all around, and the old masseria still carries the weight of its agricultural past.

The first detail to notice is underfoot: the old cocciopesto floor at the entrance, marked with the date 1864 and a geometric decoration of stones and concentric circles. The former oil mill is the strongest part of the building’s history. Five presses, stone cisterns, barrel vaults, star vaults and the remains of the old production spaces tell the story of a working estate. Olives were brought upstairs, then moved down through internal passages towards the presses below. Later, with electricity, the masseria shifted from olive oil to tobacco. The decline that followed touched much of rural Salento: damaged olive trees, damaged vineyards, migration, abandoned farm buildings and a slower fading of these agricultural houses.

Macchiaforte was taken over in 2019 and restored with care. The mood today is cleaner and more polished, yet the strongest details still come from the old structure: thick walls, stone vaults, cocciopesto, courtyards, gardens and that particular Gallipoli light.

THE ROOMS

There are eight independent apartments and suites at Masseria Macchiaforte. They are closer to private holiday apartments than classic hotel rooms. Each has its own entrance and kitchen, with spaces shaped by stone, vaulted ceilings, pale tones, wood, wicker, jute and small Salento details.

The upper-floor suites feel more open to the sky. Le Stelle, La Luna and Il Sole come with private rooftop terraces, outdoor kitchens, solarium areas and whirlpool tubs. They work well for guests who like long evenings outside, cooking something simple, or returning from the beach without moving straight indoors. The ground-floor apartments open more directly onto the garden. Some have loggias, outdoor kitchens and private green spaces; others feel more compact and intimate, with star-vaulted rooms and the masseria walls close around them.

Several suites can sleep families or friends, with separate sleeping areas, sofa beds or extra beds. Others suit couples who want privacy and their own little corner of the estate.

THE FOOD

For breakfast, expect Italian and Salento details: fresh pastries, pasticciotti, fruit, cheese, eggs, coffee and the kind of small homemade touches that make breakfast feel cared for.

The masseria does not operate as a full restaurant for dinner. The apartments all have kitchens, so longer stays remain easy, especially for families or guests who prefer to keep some meals private.

Food experiences can also be arranged. The cooking class focuses on Puglian home cooking, from handmade orecchiette to simple sauces, followed by dinner with selected local wines. Another experience is built around espresso and pasticciotto, with a local pastry-maker showing how the classic Salento pastry is prepared.

THE STAY

Days at Macchiaforte move between the masseria and the sea. Breakfast first, then the pool, the garden, a slow morning on a private terrace, or the shuttle to the affiliated lido. The pool sits outside, surrounded by pale stone, sunbeds and open Salento light. It gives the property a proper summer rhythm, especially for guests who want a quiet afternoon away from the busier beaches around Gallipoli.

Direct bookings include a beach kit at the affiliated lido: two sun loungers, a parasol and beach towels. A free shuttle can also take guests there and bring them back, which removes one of the small stresses of summer in Gallipoli.

AROUND MASSERIA MACCHIAFORTE

Gallipoli is the obvious starting point. Its old town sits on a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge, with narrow streets, churches, the castle, the harbour, sea walls and the Spiaggia della PuritĂ  inside the historic centre.

For beach days, Baia Verde is the easy name: pale sand, lidos, music, summer life and clear Ionian water. South of Gallipoli, the coast becomes more natural around Punta della Suina, Punta Pizzo and the protected area of Sant’Andrea and Punta Pizzo. These are good choices for pine trees, low rocks, transparent water and a less urban version of the coast.

Lecce is close enough for a day of baroque façades, churches and evening aperitivo. Nardò, Galatina, Otranto, Porto Selvaggio and Santa Maria di Leuca can also fit into a longer Salento stay.

THE OWNERS

Alessandro and Aurelia, the passionate couple at the helm of Masseria Macchiaforte, along with his son Lorenzo and their dedicated team, offer a level of care and engagement that transforms your stay into a familial experience. They go above and beyond to fulfil your every wish and share valuable recommendations to help you make the most of Puglia’s treasures.

GOOD TO KNOW

There are eight independent apartments and suites. Breakfast is available each morning. There is no restaurant on site, but cooking classes, daily tours and local food experiences can be arranged.

Pets are accepted; the property asks guests to mention them at the time of booking. With direct bookings, a beach kit is included at the affiliated lido: two sun loungers, a parasol and beach towels. A free shuttle to and from the lido is also available.

Doubles from 340 per night, with larger suites and peak summer dates pricing higher.
