THE SETTING

The road leaves Luarca and climbs quickly. The harbour, sidrerías and coloured houses drop behind you; the fields begin, then the trees, then the small village of El Vallín, scattered across the hillside. Hotel Rural 3 Cabos sits above it all, facing the northern sea. From the house, you can see the three headlands that gave the hotel its name: Busto, Vidío and Peñas. The geography is simple once you are there: green Asturias below your feet, the Cantabrian in front of you, and the coast close enough for a beach day without sleeping in the middle of the summer movement.

The building was once a ruined Indiano house — one of those Asturian houses built by emigrants who returned from the Americas with money and a wish to be seen. Tomás Bernar found it in very poor condition: old walls, blocked windows, water coming through the roof, owls nesting above.

He kept the original stone-and-wood character and added something more unexpected: a glass-fronted dining and lounge space that turns the hotel into a lookout over the fields and water. That mix gives 3 Cabos its personality. It is rural Asturias, but with a sharper eye than the usual country hotel.

THE ROOMS

There are nine rooms, named after beaches and headlands along the Asturian coast. Some look straight towards the sea. Others face the fields, hills and garden around the house. The upper rooms have more of the old-house feeling: sloping ceilings, beams, stone, wood and big windows. Vidío is tucked under the roof with a mountain view. Busto and Peñas are the ones for guests who want the coast in front of them.

The decoration is warmer and more personal than expected from the outside: wood, stone, clean bedding, playful details, good lighting and the hotel’s organic millet-husk pillows. Nothing feels standardised. You sense the hand of someone who enjoys objects, rooms and small practical decisions.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served à la carte. The table is generous in the right way: eggs, pastries, fruit, fresh orange juice, Asturian cheeses, Spanish hams, homemade cakes, coffee, and slower choices for people in no hurry to leave.

The restaurant is reserved for guests and opens for dinner. The cooking stays close to the area: fresh fish from the Luarca auction, Asturian beef, local cheeses, seafood, seasonal starters and vegetables from the hotel’s own organic garden. In season, that garden brings lettuce, peppers, piparras, courgettes, tomatoes, pumpkins, leeks, onions, cucumbers and strawberries into the kitchen.

The bar has more ambition than a rural-hotel corner usually does: local beer, natural cider, spirits, premium gins, rums and a wine list with more than forty references.

THE STAY

3 Cabos is built for looking out. The glass lounge is the centre of the house: sofas, books, fireplaces, game tables, a bar, a dining room, and a constant pull towards the coast. On grey days, it becomes the best place to be. On clear days, it makes leaving slightly difficult.

Outside, the estate spreads across lawns and garden corners, with loungers, tables and space for children to play. Cows graze nearby. The air changes quickly. The sea can look close, then disappear behind weather, then return in full blue.

Guests can borrow bicycles, order a picnic, ask for beach towels or simple beach gear, or book a massage in the room. None of it feels like a programmed activity list. It is more a set of small tools for using the place well.

AROUND 3 CABOS

Luarca is the first outing. It is only around 7 km away and has everything a good Asturian fishing town should have: harbour, white houses, steep streets, seafood, sidrerías, a cemetery above the sea and a lighthouse watching the coast.

The beaches around this part of western Asturias are varied and often quieter than travellers expect from northern Spain. Portizuelo, Taurán, Otur, Frejulfe, Barayo, Sabugo and La Cueva all make sense depending on the weather, tide and mood.

The coast is not only sand. There are cliffs, headlands, forest paths, small coves and roads that keep returning to the sea. Walkers can follow sections close to the edge of the land, with the kind of Atlantic air that clears the head quickly.

For villages, Puerto de Vega, Tapia de Casariego and Cudillero are all worth time. Taramundi takes you inland into another Asturias, with stone houses, craft traditions, rivers and green hills.

Closer to Luarca, the Jardines de la Fonte Baxa are a surprise: a large botanical garden above the coast, full of plants, trees and views. The local golf course, horse riding, kayaking, paddle surf and river activities give the area more range than a simple beach stay.

THE OWNERS

Hotel Rural 3 Cabos is the project of Tomás, originally from Bilbao. Before opening the hotel, he worked for years in audiovisual production and advertising. He spent months looking for the right building in northern Spain before finding the old Indiano house in El Vallín. The project grew from the idea of a small rural house into a proper hotel, shaped around the view and the building’s original character.

Tomás also has a strong interest in decoration and handmade objects. Around the hotel, everyday materials have been turned into lamps and small pieces of furniture. Some are useful, some are decorative, all of them make the house feel less bought-in. Years of travelling seem to have made him attentive to the details that annoy guests elsewhere: comfort, light, rest, useful spaces, and a house that feels looked after without becoming formal.

GOOD TO KNOW

Hotel Rural 3 Cabos has 9 rooms. Breakfast is included. The restaurant is reserved for guests and serves dinner only. Service starts at 20:30, with the last seating at 21:45. The restaurant is closed on Mondays, and tables should be reserved in advance.

The hotel closes seasonally from 18 December to 14 March.

A car is strongly recommended. From the A-8 motorway, take exit 465 Luarca-Otur, then follow the road towards El Vallín. Luarca is around 7 km away. Asturias Airport is around 55–60 km away.
