Bermeo, the nearest town, is one of the great fishing ports of the Basque coast, with an old harbour, narrow streets, pintxos, tuna history and a working maritime character that still feels real. The sea is not background here. It feeds the town, shapes the cooking and sits inside many of the stories told at Nafarrola.
Mundaka is close too, famous for one of Europe’s most respected left-hand waves. Even guests who never surf will understand the appeal: the estuary, the harbour, the sandbank, the changing tides and the light across the water. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an essential outing, with its stone steps, island hermitage, cliffs and Atlantic wind. It is dramatic, popular and still worth doing, especially outside the busiest hours.
The Urdaibai estuary brings a softer landscape: wetlands, birdlife, river edges, oak woods and quiet water. Gernika gives the region its deeper historical weight, with the Assembly House, the Tree of Gernika and the Peace Museum. The Oma Forest, Santimamiñe caves, Ogoño cliffs, Laga beach and Laida beach all sit within easy reach.
Bilbao is close enough for the Guggenheim, galleries, restaurants, shopping and a very different urban day. Coming back to Nafarrola after Bilbao is part of the pleasure: city, then green valley, then dinner in the old farmhouse.
