THE SETTING

Château Laffitte Carcasset sits in Saint-Estèphe, one of the great names of the Médoc. Bordeaux is about an hour away by car, but here the landscape is already pure Left Bank: straight vineyard roads, gravelly soils, low stone buildings and the Gironde estuary not far away.

The estate is one of the oldest in the appellation. The vineyard was first mentioned in 1759, then appeared as “Le Carcasset” on the Belleyme map in 1767. In 1781, Jean Laffitte, a solicitor and prosecutor for the king in Bordeaux, bought the property and gave it the name that still remains.

The château is a classic 18th-century chartreuse, the kind of low Bordeaux manor house that belongs naturally to the vineyard around it. Reception rooms open towards the vines, the garden sits close to the house, and the whole place feels more like a wine estate that happens to welcome guests than a hotel dropped into wine country.

THE ROOMS

There are five guest rooms in the château: At Sea, Desert Island, Faraway Kingdom, Mangrove and Shore.

The names already tell you the idea. Each room is inspired by travel, navigation, or faraway landscapes, with wallpapers, colours, and furniture chosen to suit that theme. It could easily feel theatrical, but the best parts are simpler: the proportions of the old house, the mosaic bathrooms, the park or vineyard views, and the fact that you sleep inside the estate.

The rooms range from around 28 to 40 m². At Sea is blue-toned and set in the north wing. Desert Island uses sandy and dark green shades. Faraway Kingdom has an India-inspired atmosphere. Mangrove and Shore are larger rooms, with sitting areas and the possibility to sleep up to four guests.

The style is more decorative than minimal. It makes sense in this château: travel trunks, patterned fabrics, mosaic tiles, strong colours, a certain old-world imagination. Outside, the vines bring everything back to Saint-Estèphe.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served at the château. The best version is simple: coffee, bread, something fresh, then the view towards the park or vines before the day begins.

There is no restaurant at Château Laffitte Carcasset. For lunch and dinner, guests usually go out in Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Margaux, Bordeaux or one of the nearby villages. The team can help with addresses, which is useful in the Médoc, where planning ahead often makes the difference.

Wine is the main reason to stay here. The estate produces Château Laffitte Carcasset, Le Corsaire de Laffitte Carcasset and Reflet de Laffitte Carcasset. Guests can taste at the château, buy bottles on site, or use the stay as a base for visiting other Médoc estates.

THE STAY

The guest lounge is one of the nicest parts of the house. There are Chesterfield sofas, French billiards, space to read, or sit with a glass of wine after a tasting. Outside, the pool sits in the garden, with the magnolias and vines nearby. It gives the stay a softer side, especially in summer, when the Médoc can feel very dry and open.

A tour and tasting are included with the stay. The visit usually introduces the estate, vineyards, vat room, cellars and wines. It is not just an optional extra here; it is part of the point of sleeping at Laffitte Carcasset. The estate has also invested seriously in its winemaking. The vineyard is managed with sustainable practices and holds HVE 3 certification. The vat room was redesigned in 2020 with 28 temperature-controlled vats, allowing plot-by-plot work. The historic cellar under the manor house was also restored, with a second cellar added for barrel ageing.

For guests, the important part is simple: you do not just see a pretty château. You see a working Saint-Estèphe estate from the inside.

AROUND THE PLACE

Château Laffitte Carcasset is a strong base for the Médoc wine route. Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the major Médoc appellations, with Pauillac just below it, then Saint-Julien, Margaux and the vineyards closer to Bordeaux.

The best days are built around two or three visits, not more. A morning at the château, lunch in Pauillac or Saint-Julien, then another estate in the afternoon. Too many tastings and the day loses its shape. The Gironde estuary is part of the landscape too. Its influence matters for the vines, but it also changes the feeling of the place: open skies, wide water nearby, cooler air in summer, and roads that run between vineyards and small ports.

Bordeaux is about an hour away, useful either at the beginning or end of the trip. The Atlantic coast and Arcachon Bay can also be reached for a longer day out, though the main reason to stay here remains the Médoc itself.

THE OWNERS

Château Laffitte Carcasset has belonged to several families over more than two centuries. Since 2016, it has been owned by Pierre Rousseau, originally from Mayenne. His story is not the usual inherited-Bordeaux-estate narrative. He came to the region for years before buying the château, drawn by wine, but also by the place itself. Since taking over, he has restored the house, renewed the cellars and brought fresh energy to the estate.

Day to day, the welcome is handled by the château team. They guide visits, serve breakfast, help with practical details and make the estate feel easy to use, even for guests who are not wine experts.

There are five guest rooms. Some rooms can welcome up to four guests with a sofa bed.

A tour and tasting are included with the stay. Visits are available in French and English. Opening days vary by season, with annual closure usually between mid-December and mid-January. The estate works well for couples, wine lovers, small groups and travellers combining Bordeaux with the Médoc.
