THE SETTING

Casa Cometa is a countryside guesthouse in the Maremma, just outside Grosseto and a few kilometres inland from the coast. It sits in the Quercesecca area, among pine trees, oaks, fields and old farm buildings, close enough to the sea but far enough to keep a quiet rural atmosphere.

The house is part of Il Pingro, a project created by cousins Chiara and Margherita as a return to their family land and to the culture of this part of southern Tuscany. What began with an old family vineyard has become something broader: a guesthouse, a wine project, a small cultural platform and a place for food, farming, design and hospitality to meet. Artists, chefs, and researchers may also be present at times, as the house serves partly as an interdisciplinary residency.

The feeling is simple but very particular: sea nearby, countryside all around, wine from the project, breakfast in the garden and enough character to make the stay feel personal rather than standard.

THE ROOMS

Casa Cometa has five rooms, which can be booked individually or as part of a full-house rental.

Camera Chitra is on the ground floor and is the most independent room. It features original Tuscan terracotta floors, antique wooden cabinets, a fireplace, a king-size bed, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower and marble floors. Camera Vega is on the first floor and mixes old wooden cabinets with contemporary pieces, and the bathroom has classic 1950s tiles, a bathtub and a distinctive sink.

On the second floor, Camera Cassiopea, Camera Meissa and Camera Andromeda. Cassiopea has mid-century details, a bamboo-framed king-size bed and a built-in wardrobe lined with reclaimed English wallpaper. Meissa is more flexible, with a king-size bed that can be separated into twins on request. Andromeda is bright and spacious, with a king-size bed, a mirrored wardrobe, an antique cabinet, and a desk. These three rooms share a bathroom with a shower built into the bathtub.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is intentionally relaxed, with a mix of savoury and sweet dishes, fresh fruit, seasonal produce and hot and cold drinks. When the weather allows, breakfast can be taken outside in the garden, under the trees. Otherwise, it moves indoors around the communal table.

Food at the house can go further if booked in advance. Il Pingro offers private lunches, private dinners, wine tastings, pizza evenings with MiaoMiao Pizza and other seasonal experiences. These are not always available on demand, so they need to be planned.

The wine tasting is especially relevant because Il Pingro began with the rediscovery of a small family vineyard. Guests can taste four Il Pingro wines with seasonal plates, including cheeses from La Maremmana. Private dinners are served under the stars, with a four-course menu and Il Pingro wines, usually for groups of at least eight.

THE STAY

The garden is one of the strongest parts of the stay. It is shaded by pines and surrounded by the Maremma countryside. There are places to sit, read, talk, drink coffee, have wine, or do very little. It feels more like being at a friend’s country house than staying in an agriturismo with fixed routines.
Guests have access to car parking, Wi-Fi in the living room and garden, and a guide to the surroundings. Extras can include bike rental, a more detailed local guide and booking service, dog stay, and additional guest beds where possible.

Yoga sessions take place outdoors, with gentle Hatha and Vinyasa practices followed by breakfast. The pizza party is more informal: locally milled flours, dough, a warm oven, shared pizzas, music and Il Pingro wines. There is also a farm-related experience at La Maremmana, the family-run water buffalo farm with an artisanal dairy that produces handmade cheeses.

AROUND CASA COMETA

Casa Cometa is well-placed for discovering the coastal Maremma. Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare are the closest seaside references, with sandy beaches, pinewoods and a relaxed summer rhythm. The area is flatter and wilder than the more famous Tuscan hill towns, which gives it a different personality.
The Maremma Regional Park is one of the main reasons to stay here. Its coastline runs from Principina a Mare down towards Talamone, with beaches, dunes, pine forests, wetlands, Mediterranean scrub and the Uccellina hills. It is a strong place for walking, cycling, birdwatching and days that mix beach and nature.

This part of Tuscany is also good for slow countryside drives, horse riding, cycling, small farms, local wine, buffalo mozzarella and informal food experiences. It is less about ticking off Florence or Siena and more about understanding the Maremma on its own terms: sea, pinewoods, fields, animals, heat, simple food and long evenings outside.

THE OWNERS

Casa Cometa is the project of Chiara and Margherita, two cousins who returned to their native Maremma with backgrounds in design, fashion and the arts. Their work with Il Pingro is rooted in family memory, agriculture and cultural exchange.

Their approach feels young, personal and rooted. There is taste in the interiors, but also a real sense of use: people cooking, guests gathering, wine being poured, artists passing through, breakfast being served in the garden.

GOOD TO KNOW

Breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi in the living room and garden, and a guide to the surroundings are included. Check-in is usually from 3 pm to 6 pm, and check-out is by 11 am. Dogs can be accepted for an extra charge, and bike rentals, private meals, wine tastings, yoga sessions, and pizza evenings can be arranged depending on availability.

Rates usually start at around €180 per night for a room, with full-house rental priced separately depending on the season, dates, and booking conditions.
