The Hospedaria sits in Sítio da Cumeada, a quiet rural crossroads between Tavira and Cacela Velha, in the Eastern Algarve. The sea is close, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is just down the road, and the land around the hotel is still shaped by orchards, farms, low white houses and dry country lanes.
The building has a proper local story. Opened in 1917, it was once a roadside tavern, general store, post office and one of the few public telephone points in the area. For decades, people came here to buy, sell, talk, drink, dance and catch up with what was happening beyond the countryside. After years of abandonment, Rui Liberato de Sousa and Nuno Ramos brought it back to life with Lisbon studio Atelier RUA, the same team behind nearby Pensão Agrícola.
You still feel that older life in the house. The red post office sign remains outside. Inside, the old tavern has become a bar, with tiled floors, vintage furniture, old signs, industrial lamps, books, photographs and objects that feel found rather than placed. The result is relaxed, stylish and slightly nostalgic, without falling into rural cliché.
