Pensão Agrícola

Tavira - Portugal
A six-room farmhouse between Tavira and Cacela Velha, with orange trees, private patios and a donkey watching the comings and goings. The Algarve, but slower, quieter and much more interesting.

THE SETTING

Pensão Agrícola sits in the Barrocal Algarvio, between Tavira and Cacela Velha. The sea is close, but the first impression is countryside: orange trees, fig trees, almond trees, carob trees, dry earth, white walls and the softer pace of the eastern Algarve. The farmhouse was built in 1920 as a wedding present for the only daughter of the Silva Gomes family. It remained active as a farm until 1970, then was closed and forgotten for around 40 years.

When Rui Liberato de Sousa and Nuno Ramos found it, they did not erase that past. They kept furniture, photographs, clothes, books, and other objects from the house and worked with Atelier Rua to carefully restore the buildings. Three rooms are in the original house, and three others were added outside. The result still feels like a farm, but edited. White walls, old doors, vintage portraits, a few strange objects, patios cut into the walls, and a pool/tank that feels more rural than resort.

This is the sister property of The Hospedaria, also part of the same small hospitality group. Pensão Agrícola came first — quieter, more rural, more tucked away.

THE ROOMS

There are six rooms, all with private patios. Three are inside the original farmhouse: Curral, Chaminé and Armazém. Three are in the outside modules: Páteo, Açoteia and Muro.

The rooms are simple, but not plain. Each one has its own rhythm: a mezzanine reading corner in Curral, a sitting room in Páteo, a roof terrace in Açoteia, thick walls, old pieces, clean lines and small details from the house’s previous life. Beds are large, bathrooms have heated floors, and the practical comforts are all there: air conditioning, minibar, Bluetooth sound station and Nova Saboaria amenities. The outdoor patios are important. They give each room a private place to sit with coffee, read after the beach, or do very little.
Nothing feels overdecorated. The pleasure is in the balance: old farm objects, whitewashed architecture, good materials, and just enough design to make the place sharp without making it precious.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served on the shaded terrace beside the farmhouse. It is one of the best moments here: the table, the garden, the morning light, and the feeling that nobody is rushing you towards the day.

There is no standard restaurant running all day, but light snacks can be served by the tank, and dinners can be prepared with advance reservation. The honesty bar keeps things relaxed between meals. Guests can also order picnic baskets and umbrellas for the beach, which makes sense here. The coast is close, and days often move between the farm, the Ria Formosa and the sand.

For dinner outside the property, Tavira, Cacela Velha and the surrounding villages have plenty of good options. This is one of the best parts of the Algarve for simple fish, seafood, local produce and unshowy restaurants.

THE STAY

The stay is built around the courtyard, the tank and the slow rhythm of the farm. The plunge pool is heated in winter and has a small solarium area around it. In summer, it becomes the place to cool off between beach trips. There is an honesty bar, snacks by the tank, massages on request, a small shop, and a scent created especially for Pensão Agrícola by perfumer Lourenço Lucena. The bath amenities are inspired by that same fragrance.

Jeremias the donkey is part of the house too. Guests can take part in simple donkey activities such as feeding, brushing or washing, depending on the moment.

Tuk-tuk transfers to the beach can be arranged, as well as tuk-tuk tours to the beaches, historic towns or inland hills. This gives the stay a nice local rhythm: no big programme, just small things that make the place easier to enjoy.

AROUND PENSÃO AGRÍCOLA

Pensão Agrícola is close to some of the best parts of the eastern Algarve. Tavira is nearby, with its old streets, river, churches, tiled façades and slower atmosphere. Cacela Velha is also close, small and beautiful, with views over the lagoon and the sea.

The Ria Formosa is only around 1.5 km away. This is where the Algarve changes completely: salt marshes, sandbanks, lagoons, birds and long beaches reached by boat, walking routes or small local transfers. The nearest beaches feel very different from the built-up Algarve further west. This side is flatter, quieter and more open. Manta Rota, Cacela Velha, Praia do Barril, Ilha de Tavira, and the beaches around the Ria Formosa are all easy to reach by car or with an arranged transfer.

For a longer day, Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António, the Guadiana River and even Seville are possible. But the best use of Pensão Agrícola is probably simpler: breakfast on the terrace, beach for a few hours, tank in the afternoon, dinner in Tavira or Cacela Velha, then back to the farm.

THE OWNERS

Pensão Agrícola is the project of Rui Liberato de Sousa and Nuno Ramos. They had no formal hotel background when they started, but they had spent years travelling, noticing what made a stay work and what made it forgettable. That shows. The house does not feel like it was designed using a hotel formula. It feels like two people spent time choosing the right objects, the right materials, the right corners to leave empty, the right amount of service.

Rui and Nuno later opened The Hospedaria nearby, but Pensão Agrícola keeps the feeling of the first project: smaller, more rural, a little more eccentric.

GOOD TO KNOW

There are six rooms, all with private patios. Three are in the original farmhouse and three in the outside modules. Children are accepted only from age 12. Extra beds and baby cots are not available. A reservation for three people requires booking two or more rooms.

The property is close to Tavira, Cacela Velha and the Ria Formosa. A car is useful, although beach transfers can be arranged.

Prices start at €200 per night in the low season.
