THE SETTING

Maso Zambo is an adults-only mountain lodge in Cassina Valsassina, just inland from Lake Como. It sits above the village at around 800 metres, surrounded by chestnut woods, mountain pastures and the green slopes of the Valsassina valley. You are far enough from the lake to escape the crowds and polished villa circuit, but close enough to reach Lecco, Varenna or the eastern shore of Lake Como for a day out.

The word “maso” is more commonly associated with the Alpine farmhouses of South Tyrol, where a house, barn, and land are combined into a single working unit. Stefano Zambon took that idea and reinterpreted it here in Lombardy: two rooms, a small farm, a private spa, a personal restaurant and a level of attention that would be impossible in a larger hotel. Maso Zambo is built for privacy, quiet and a very personal kind of hospitality. With only two rooms, the experience feels almost private by nature.

THE ROOMS

There are only two guest rooms at Maso Zambo: M and Z. Both keep the same calm, pared-back language: wood, stone, natural textures, soft light and views towards the Valsassina mountains. The rooms sit within a restored stone building that was once part stable, part hayloft. The renovation keeps that rural origin visible, but the interiors are much more refined than rustic. Old wood and natural stone bring warmth; glass, resin and clean-lined bathrooms add a more contemporary edge. Beds face north towards the landscape, so the first thing you see in the morning is the valley and the mountains beyond.

THE FOOD

Food is one of the main reasons to come to Maso Zambo. Breakfast follows the same personal rhythm as the rest of the stay. Expect homemade cakes, jams and preserves, yoghurt, eggs, cheese, cured meats, fruit, juices and good coffee, with products from the farm or selected locally whenever possible.

The restaurant is small and intimate, with an open professional kitchen and just a few tables. Stefano cooks himself, and the experience is deliberately built around trust. There is no need to spend time studying a long menu. The kitchen prepares what makes sense that day, based on the garden, the season, the animals, the local producers and Stefano’s own ideas.

Lunch or dinner is available by reservation and usually features a four-course menu. The cooking is rural in origin but more refined in execution: vegetables and herbs from the garden, eggs from the hens, fresh pasta, local freshwater fish, goat, meat, offal, wild fruits, honey and carefully selected wines.

THE STAY

Maso Zambo calls itself a “Personal Hotel”. The idea is not to offer many facilities, but to offer very few things with real attention: two rooms, food, nature, silence, and a private spa.

The spa is one of the most surprising parts of the stay, especially for a property with only two rooms. It is reserved privately and includes a Swiss pine sauna, with both a classic Finnish setting and a gentler bio-sauna option. After the heat, guests can cool down with ice, a cold-water ritual or a Kneipp-style jet, then rest on loungers with herbal infusions. Massages and treatments can be booked in advance, and the mood is intentionally quiet.

Outside, the farm covers around 2.5 hectares, with woodland, pasture, vegetable gardens, terraces, a greenhouse and animals. Hens, ducks, geese and bees are part of the project, along with donkeys and the small agricultural rhythm that feeds the kitchen. The farm produces honey, eggs, jams, preserves, juices, vegetables, aromatic herbs and berries, depending on the season.

AROUND MASO ZAMBO

Maso Zambo sits in Valsassina, a green mountain valley behind Lecco and Lake Como. It is a good base for guests who want the lake nearby, but do not want to sleep in the busiest lakeside villages.

Lake Como is easily accessible for a day trip. Lecco is the closest city on the lake, while Varenna is one of the most rewarding villages on the eastern shore, with boats connecting to Bellagio and Menaggio. That makes it possible to have a classic Lake Como day — lake views, ferries, villas, cafés — and then return to the quiet of the mountains.

The surroundings are more about walking, cycling and mountain life. The Grigne mountains are close, with trails for experienced hikers and gentler routes for easier days outside. Piani di Bobbio is useful in winter for skiing and other winter activities, and in summer for walking and enjoying the mountain air. The Valsassina cycle path offers a gentler way to traverse the valley floor.

THE OWNERS

Maso Zambo is the project of Stefano Zambon, known here simply as Zambo. He was born in Milan and worked for years in the wine industry before choosing a different life in the mountains. Stefano is not only the owner. He is the host, cook, farmer, wine selector and central presence of the house.

That is what makes Maso Zambo difficult to categorise. It is an agriturismo, a lodge, a restaurant, a farm and a small spa, but none of those words fully explain it. The better description is simple: it is Stefano’s world, opened to a very small number of guests.

GOOD TO KNOW

Maso Zambo is adults-only. Pets are not accepted.

Breakfast and one hour of private spa use are included in the standard overnight stay. The four-course lunch or dinner should be booked in advance and is charged separately. Massages, treatments and certain wellness programmes are also available on request.

Rates start at €300 per night for a double room.
