THE SETTING

Milka sits beside Lake Jasna, just outside Kranjska Gora, where the road begins to climb towards the Vršič Pass and Triglav National Park. The setting is hard to beat. The lake is directly below, the peaks of Prisank and Razor rise behind it, and the Austrian and Italian borders are both close enough to shape a proper alpine road trip.

The building was once a well-known local guesthouse. In 2022, it reopened as a six-room boutique hotel and restaurant after a full redesign by Ljubljana-based Gartner Lifecycle Architecture. The renovation keeps the house small, but gives it a completely different ambition. Local limestone, oak, larch, dark timber, handmade ceramics and deep colours drawn from the lake and forest give the interiors a very Slovenian alpine identity.

Milka works for two kinds of travellers: those coming for the mountains, and those coming for the food. Most will end up caring about both.

THE ROOMS

There are only six rooms: three suites and three luxury doubles. All look towards Lake Jasna and the Julian Alps.

The three doubles are on the upper floor. Lake Luxury Double is the smallest, around 18 m², but has a strong view and a freestanding bathtub placed towards the window. Pine is slightly larger, with sloping ceilings, two balcony-style roof windows and a tucked-away reading corner. The Cone is the most spacious of the doubles, with a bathtub, a lounge area, and enough room for an extra single bed if needed.

The suites give more space and stronger outdoor connections. Rock Suite is the most recognisable, built around a piece of natural rock that rises directly through the floor. It has a freestanding bathtub facing the lake, a sitting area, a walk-in wardrobe and a small private patio.

The rooms are polished, but not cold. Wood, limestone, velvet, dark metal and warm lighting keep them comfortable, while the view stops the design from becoming the main event.

THE FOOD

Food is the heart of Milka. Restaurant Milka is led by chef David Žefran and has two Michelin stars. In the 2026 Michelin Guide Slovenia, it remains the country’s only two-star restaurant.

The cooking is rooted in the alpine region around Kranjska Gora, but it is not nostalgic mountain food. Žefran works with local ingredients, foraging, fermentation, preserved produce and a very precise sense of season. The restaurant also uses Slovenian makers, from ceramics and glassware to wooden pieces for the table. Dinner is a proper tasting-menu experience and should be booked well ahead.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant with lake and mountain views and includes fresh juices, good coffee, bread, pastries, local cheeses, smoked fish, charcuterie, fruit, cakes, and eggs cooked to order. For guests staying in, room service is available throughout the day, including local cheese and charcuterie platters. There is also a terrace bar for drinks, cocktails and wine when the weather allows.

THE STAY

There is a private Finnish sauna for two, bookable in one-hour slots. Massages can be arranged in several rooms, and yoga is sometimes offered during summer. Ski and bike storage is available, which makes the hotel practical in both winter and summer.

The hotel follows strong sustainability principles. It avoids single-use plastics, uses natural cosmetics, works with local suppliers, composts, reuses heat where possible and generates part of its own energy. Even the slippers are made from recycled PET.

The location makes it easy to choose between doing very little and doing a lot. You can walk around the lake, sit on the terrace, use the sauna and book dinner. Or you can start early for hiking, skiing, cycling, climbing or a drive over the Vršič Pass.

AROUND MILKA BOUTIQUE HOTEL

Lake Jasna is directly outside the hotel. It consists of two connected alpine lakes at the confluence of the Velika and Mala Pišnica streams, with a bronze ibex statue and some of the best mountain views around Kranjska Gora.

In winter, the Kranjska Gora ski area is close by. It is not the largest resort in the Alps, but it is easy, scenic, and useful for a few days in the snow. The surrounding region also gives access to ski touring, snowshoeing and cross-border ski days in Austria or Italy.

In summer, this is one of Slovenia’s best bases for active travel. The Vršič Pass climbs above the hotel, with 50 hairpin bends and access to the Soča Valley on the other side. The Russian Chapel, built by prisoners of war during the First World War, sits along the road.

Zelenci Nature Reserve is nearby, with bright green spring water and views towards the mountains. Planica is famous for ski jumping and Nordic sports, while the Tamar Valley offers an easy, beautiful walk into high-alpine scenery. Martuljek waterfalls, Peričnik waterfall, the Vrata Valley, and the edges of Triglav National Park can all make for strong days out. Some are easy; others need proper mountain planning.

Kranjska Gora is also excellent for cycling, with routes towards Italy, Austria and the wider Julian Alps.

THE OWNERS

Milka is closely tied to David Žefran and the young team around him. Žefran did not follow the most traditional path for a chef. He studied sociology, worked in different restaurants, spent time at Frantzén in Stockholm, then returned to Slovenia to build something of his own in Kranjska Gora.

The restaurant received its first Michelin star only a few months after opening and its second the following year. That speed says a lot, but the more interesting part is the energy behind it: a team trying to make people look differently at Slovenian alpine food.

The hotel side follows the same spirit. Service is precise, warm and quietly ambitious. The staff understand that guests may be here for a once-in-a-lifetime dinner, a romantic weekend, a ski trip or simply a few days beside the lake.

GOOD TO KNOW

Milka Boutique Hotel has six rooms. All have views of Lake Jasna and the Julian Alps. Breakfast is included when booking directly through the hotel room pages. Restaurant Milka serves a tasting-menu dinner and should be reserved well in advance, especially for weekends and high season.

Children aged 12 and older are welcome. The hotel is best suited to couples, food-focused travellers and active guests rather than families with young children. Dogs up to 15 kg are accepted only in the Rock Suite, with prior approval and an additional fee. Pets are not accepted in the restaurant.

Rates start at €450 per night during low-demand periods, with suites and peak-season rates priced much higher.
