Hotel Nafarrola

Bermeo - Spain
Nafarrola feels like the Basque Country before anyone has tried to translate it. Above Bermeo, it holds the coast, the green hills and two brothers’ idea of home in one quiet place.

THE SETTING

Hotel Nafarrola sits in Artike, a rural neighbourhood above Bermeo, in the Basque Country. This is Urdaibai: a protected landscape of estuary, oak forest, wetland, cliffs, beaches, fishing villages and green hills dropping towards the Cantabrian Sea. Bermeo sits below, Mundaka is close, and Bilbao stays within easy reach.

The hotel stands high in the valley, with forest around it and the sea appearing between the slopes. It feels calm, local and slightly hidden — a place close to the coast, yet held back from the noise of the road, the port and the summer crowds.

The first impression is very Basque: stone, timber, rain-washed green, serious food, deep quiet, and two brothers who know exactly where they are from.

THE ROOMS

Nafarrola has eight suites inside the restored farmhouse. The rooms are generous and calm, with a mix of old stone, wood, white walls, soft textiles and large windows. Some open to terraces or balconies, some look towards the valley and sea, others keep closer to the stone and roofline of the house.

Every room has a hydromassage bathtub, which changes the mood of the stay. Wellness doesn’t need a separate spa menu here. The bath sits in the room, near the window, and becomes part of the evening after a walk, a coastal drive or dinner at ROLA.

The higher categories add details such as wood-burning stoves, roof windows, larger terraces and wider views. In some rooms, you can look at the sky from the bed or from the bath. In others, the pleasure is simpler: thick walls, quiet, good linen, and the valley outside.

The style is restrained but warm. It keeps the caserío’s rural weight while bringing in a clean, almost Nordic sense of space. The result feels contemporary without losing the farmhouse underneath.

THE FOOD

Food is one of the main reasons to come to Nafarrola.

Breakfast is chosen the night before and served with local products: bread, eggs, cheese, yoghurt, fruit, homemade cakes, honey, preserves, tuna or anchovies from Bermeo, depending on the day and season.

ROLA is the hotel’s restaurant, led by Gaizka Goikoetxea. His cooking is rooted in Urdaibai: sea, estuary, forest, mountain, river, garden and coast. The menu reads the landscape through food, using local producers, Bermeo fish, seasonal vegetables, Basque flavours and a precise, personal sense of place.

The restaurant has been included in the Michelin Guide, and it is easy to understand why. Dinner here is not a hotel convenience. It is part of the reason Nafarrola has become a destination.

THE STAY

The house itself carries a long story. The name Nafarrola appears in historical records from the 13th century, and the current caserío is protected for its architectural and local value. Before becoming a hotel, the building supported agricultural life, including use as a dairy farm.

Josu and his family restored it with respect for the old structure, then added the contemporary wing, terraces, large windows and the calm interiors guests see today. The old and new parts sit together naturally: stone and timber, farmhouse memory and sharper design.

The stay can be quiet, but it is never passive. Josu opens the region through people and routes: txakoli tastings, small producers, coastal walks, fishing-port stories, ceramic workshops, picnics, nature guides, cycling routes, beaches, viewpoints and less obvious corners of Urdaibai.

AROUND HOTEL NAFARROLA

Bermeo, the nearest town, is one of the great fishing ports of the Basque coast, with an old harbour, narrow streets, pintxos, tuna history and a working maritime character that still feels real. The sea is not background here. It feeds the town, shapes the cooking and sits inside many of the stories told at Nafarrola.

Mundaka is close too, famous for one of Europe’s most respected left-hand waves. Even guests who never surf will understand the appeal: the estuary, the harbour, the sandbank, the changing tides and the light across the water. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an essential outing, with its stone steps, island hermitage, cliffs and Atlantic wind. It is dramatic, popular and still worth doing, especially outside the busiest hours.

The Urdaibai estuary brings a softer landscape: wetlands, birdlife, river edges, oak woods and quiet water. Gernika gives the region its deeper historical weight, with the Assembly House, the Tree of Gernika and the Peace Museum. The Oma Forest, Santimamiñe caves, Ogoño cliffs, Laga beach and Laida beach all sit within easy reach.

Bilbao is close enough for the Guggenheim, galleries, restaurants, shopping and a very different urban day. Coming back to Nafarrola after Bilbao is part of the pleasure: city, then green valley, then dinner in the old farmhouse.

THE OWNERS

Brothers Josu and Gaizka Goikoetxea run Nafarrola. They were born and raised in Bermeo, in a family used to work, trade and dealing directly with people.

Josu leads the hotel and the wine side. He is the host, the local guide, the person who knows which producer to call, which path to take, which txakoli to open and which version of Urdaibai guests should see.

Gaizka leads the kitchen at ROLA. He came to cooking through local bars and restaurants, then deepened his work in serious kitchens and through his own instinct for Basque products. His food carries memory: Bermeo fish, family tables, port life, forest, garden, estuary, coast.

Together, the brothers give Nafarrola its strength. Josu frames the stay; Gaizka gives it flavour. One brings guests into the territory, the other puts that territory on the plate.
