THE SETTING

Il Borgo del Balsamico is a boutique B&B in Emilia-Romagna, set in Botteghe di Albinea, a small village just outside Reggio Emilia. It is close enough to Parma, Modena and Bologna for proper food-focused day trips, but the atmosphere at the borgo is very different from the city: quiet lanes, old villas, gardens, trees and the slower rhythm of the Emilian countryside.

The property has three connected lives. It is a historic family home, a small guesthouse known as Le Dimore del Borgo, and an active acetaia where traditional balsamic vinegar is aged with the patience this part of Italy is famous for. That mix gives the stay its character.

The house belonged to the Crotti family, whose background includes fashion, art, architecture and balsamic vinegar. Today, sisters Cristina and Silvia have opened the borgo to travellers while continuing the family’s work as producers of Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Reggio Emilia DOP. The result is personal, elegant and very local.

THE ROOMS

The hospitality side of the property is called Le Dimore del Borgo, with eleven rooms across the Countryhouse and the Villa. The rooms are not designed to look the same. Some are named after places linked to the family’s travels, such as Ortigia and Cortina; others are named after roses in the garden, including Boule de Neige, Gertrude Jekyll and Reine des Violettes.

The feeling is closer to staying in a beautiful private home than in a conventional hotel. Rooms mix antique furniture, vintage pieces, art, family objects, soft colours and carefully chosen details. You may find old-fashioned sketches, books, wooden furniture, framed drawings, floral fabrics, pastel walls or more minimal touches depending on the room.

The Villa rooms feel romantic and garden-facing, while the Countryhouse rooms have a more rural, lived-in charm. Some are classic doubles, others offer more space, and the apartment-style Glicine arrangement works better for guests who need extra room or are travelling with family.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served with the generosity you would expect from an Emilian home. It is usually taken in the guesthouse veranda or in spaces overlooking the garden, depending on the season. The style is simple, local and homemade: cakes, bread, fruit, preserves, cheese, coffee and small details that make the morning feel personal.

The real food story, however, is the balsamic vinegar. A visit to the acetaia with tasting is included in the room rate, which is one of the best reasons to stay here. In the attic and production spaces, balsamic vinegar ages slowly in wooden barrels, following the traditional methods of Reggio Emilia. It is a process built around cooked grape must, wood, seasons and time.

There is no full restaurant on site, so lunches and dinners are usually taken in nearby trattorias, restaurants and countryside addresses recommended by the hosts.

THE STAY

The garden is one of the great pleasures of Il Borgo del Balsamico. It is a secular park with an Italian-style garden, old trees, box hedges, flower beds, roses, peonies, hydrangeas, jasmine and shaded corners for reading or doing very little. In spring and early summer, the garden becomes especially rich, but the house has a strong atmosphere through most of the year.

There is also a small seasonal pool tucked into the greenery, close to an old orchard. It is not a resort pool, and that is exactly why it works. It feels like part of the house: quiet, discreet and made for cooling off after a day in Reggio Emilia, Parma, Modena or the surrounding hills.

The atmosphere is calm and informal. You feel the family’s eye for beauty, but nothing is stiff. The borgo has style, but also birdsong, old trees, dogs, garden paths and the practical warmth of a family home.

AROUND IL BORGO DEL BALSAMICO

Il Borgo del Balsamico sits in one of Italy’s strongest food regions. Emilia-Romagna is the land of Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, traditional balsamic vinegar, fresh egg pasta, tortelli, tagliatelle, Lambrusco, and many dishes that have shaped Italian cooking far beyond the region.

Reggio Emilia is close and often overlooked, making it a good place to discover. It has arcades, squares, food shops, local restaurants and the Fondazione Maramotti, a strong stop for contemporary art in the former Max Mara factory. Nearby, you can visit Parmigiano Reggiano producers, wineries, small villages and food artisans.

Parma, Modena and Bologna are all realistic day trips, especially for travellers interested in food, markets, architecture and local culture. Modena makes sense for balsamic vinegar and cars, Parma for ham and cheese, Bologna for porticoes and pasta. The Apennine hills are also nearby for walks and quieter drives.

THE OWNERS

Il Borgo del Balsamico is run by sisters Cristina and Silvia Crotti. Their work is rooted in a family story that brings together balsamic vinegar, beauty, fashion, art and hospitality. They founded the balsamic vinegar company in the 2000s, continuing a family connection to balsamic production that goes back decades. Opening the guesthouse was a natural extension of that world: sharing the home, the garden, the acetaia and the region with people who are curious about more than just a room.

GOOD TO KNOW

Best for couples, families and food-minded travellers looking for a quiet countryside base near Reggio Emilia. Breakfast and a guided visit to the acetaia, with a balsamic tasting, are included in the room rate. Dogs are welcome with a supplement, and parking is available. The pool is seasonal, and there is no on-site restaurant.

Rates start at €180 per night for a double, depending on the season and room category.
