THE SETTING

Corte Manfredi is a small guesthouse in Alessano, in the lower Salento, set inside an old courtyard house down one of the village’s quiet lanes. This is not the Puglia of polished beach clubs and already-famous towns. Alessano feels more local, more lived-in, with stone streets, old palazzi, small squares and that particular southern rhythm where the day properly starts again after the heat drops.

The house was once an ancient residence of an important noble family of Alessano, later abandoned, before Federica and Massimiliano restored it with care. They kept the Salento bones visible: barrel vaults, star vaults, courtyard proportions, stone details, old mosaics and thick walls that hold the cool. Then they added a cleaner, more contemporary layer, so the place feels fresh rather than museum-like.

THE ROOMS

Accommodation is compact and personal, with five double rooms and a larger suite option depending on the setup. Rooms are named simply — 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, 7B and Suite — which somehow fits the place. No forced romantic names, just beautiful old spaces brought back to life. The rooms differ in size and character, but they share the same language: pale stone, vaulted ceilings, handcrafted details, iron beds, soft lighting, and small design touches that do not try too hard. Several rooms can connect, which is useful for families or friends travelling together.

Room 5A keeps one of the strongest original details, with a mosaic floor, a barrel vault, and a handmade iron bed. Room 5B is more generous, with an antechamber and a striking bathroom where the old stone and star vaults become part of the shower experience. Room 6B is more intimate, with a bathtub that creates a slower mood. The Suite is the most independent option, with more space, a kitchen and a private outdoor area, making it the best choice for guests who want a little more autonomy.

THE FOOD

Breakfast at the house is not an international buffet. The focus is proudly Salento: local pastries, good coffee from a nearby roaster, seasonal products and ingredients chosen from local artisans rather than supermarket standards.

Breakfast is served at your table, either on the terrace or in your room, depending on the setup and season. The best version is clearly the terrace: rooftops around you, prickly pears in sight, morning light on the old village stones, and that very Salento feeling of not needing to rush out immediately.

There is no restaurant at Corte Manfredi. Alessano and the surrounding villages have small trattorias, cafés, and local food spots, and the guesthouse can also help point you towards nearby tastings, producers, and experiences.

AROUND CORTE MANFREDI

The Adriatic side is closer and more dramatic. Novaglie, Marina Serra, Tricase Porto, and the cliffs around Ciolo offer rocky swimming spots, small harbours, caves, and clear water. This is the side for people who like steps into the sea, wild edges and a bit of salt on everything.

The Ionian side is softer, with beaches around Pescoluse, Torre Pali and the marinas of Salve. That is where you go for pale sand, shallow water and longer beach days. Santa Maria di Leuca is also nearby, marking the southern tip of Salento, where the Adriatic and Ionian meet.

Inland, Specchia and Presicce are easy village stops, both good for slow wandering rather than checklist sightseeing. Presicce is known for its underground oil mills, while Specchia has one of the loveliest historic centres in the lower Salento. Lecce, Otranto, and Gallipoli are longer day trips, but still possible if you want baroque architecture, old ports, or a more classic Puglia itinerary. Corte Manfredi can also help organise local experiences: oil, wine and cheese tastings, an orecchiette cooking class, ceramics, luminarie workshops, a traditional gozzo boat outing, or a massage back at the house.

THE OWNERS

Corte Manfredi is the project of Federica and Massimiliano, who discovered the old residence when it was still abandoned and decided to restore it. Their idea is clearly not to create a grand hotel but a small courtyard house for people who want privacy, design, comfort and a village base in the lower Salento. You feel their taste in the materials, the lighting, the furniture, the bathrooms and the way the old spaces have been opened without losing their character.

GOOD TO KNOW

Rooms can be booked individually, and the entire property can also be rented exclusively, featuring six double bedrooms, six bathrooms, living space, a kitchen, two terraces, a solarium, and a pool. Automated check-in gives guests more flexibility on arrival. Massages, tastings, workshops and boat experiences can be arranged on request. Sorry, no pets.

Rates usually start at €100 for a double, with the suite and exclusive-use stays priced higher depending on the season and booking conditions.
