THE SETTING

The Barö sits in Barösund, on Finland’s southern coast. This is the Gulf of Finland archipelago, less than an hour from Helsinki, where the landscape changes quickly from capital-city streets to pine forest, granite rock, narrow sea passages, small harbours and low islands.

Barösund is a small archipelago village with a strong maritime character. Ferries, boats, forest tracks, old summer houses, sea views and Swedish-speaking coastal culture shape the area. The strait itself has long been part of the inland archipelago route, used by boats moving along the Finnish coast.

The Barö sits on a rocky site above the water. The hotel is arranged as a collection of separate wooden accommodation buildings, connected by raised walkways and gathered around a main building with reception, lounge, bar and The Berg restaurant.

THE ROOMS

The Barö has 18 separate cabins, placed across the rocky, forested site.

The rooms are built from Finnish wood, with dark interiors and large windows facing the forest, the valley or the sea. The darkness inside is part of the experience. It makes the view sharper: pine trunks, water, winter ice, passing boats, evening light.

The categories vary from compact rooms to larger suites. Some are made for two, others can work for friends or families, and the Barösund suite offers the most complete version, with living space, sauna, jacuzzi and views over Hycklesund Bay.

The design stays restrained: wood, glass, clean lines, quality bedding, soft lighting, private terraces and a feeling of being tucked into the landscape. The rooms are modern, but the mood belongs to the archipelago.

THE FOOD

The Berg is the restaurant at The Barö, with panoramic windows overlooking the forest and the water. Breakfast starts the day in a very Nordic way: local bread, dairy, eggs, berries, fish, seasonal produce and small things chosen with care. It feels clean, calm and useful before a day outside.

Lunch and dinner follow the same direction. The Berg pairs Nordic flavours with local ingredients and trusted producers, with a seasonal menu that changes through the year. Expect fish, vegetables, game when the season allows, forest flavours, good bread, thoughtful drinks and a dining room shaped by the view.

There is also a bar and lounge for drinks before or after dinner. Champagne has a visible place on the drinks side, which gives the hotel a slightly celebratory edge.

THE STAY

The seaside sauna is the essential ritual. It sits by the water, with a large window, a terrace, a hot tub and the option to swim in the sea in summer or take a winter dip when conditions allow. There is also a fireplace room for a drink or something small afterwards.

The hotel has a private beach area, sunset terrace, bikes and access to local activities through partner companies. Guests can hike, cycle, paddle, boat, swim, pick berries, join seasonal nature experiences or stay close to the cabin.

The site has been designed to keep cars away from the hotel area. Guests leave their vehicle at the parking area and continue on foot, with electric transport available when needed.

AROUND THE BARÖ

Barösund gives travellers a softer, more local version of the Finnish coast. The immediate area is good for walking, cycling, boating and slow archipelago days. Small roads follow the water, ferries move between islands, and forest trails lead to views over granite, sea and pines.

Inkoo is close to harbour life, cafés, and a local coastal atmosphere. Fagervik adds history, with its old ironworks setting, manor landscape and quiet roads. Degerby has its own stories linked to the Porkkala lease period, when part of this region was rented to the Soviet Union after the Second World War.

Elisaari is one of the classic island outings in the Inkoo archipelago, with nature, walking and summer harbour life. Kopparnäs-Störsvik offers wilder coastal scenery, rocks, forest, and open-sea views.

Fiskars Village, Ekenäs and Hanko can all become day trips. Helsinki is close enough for arrival, departure or a city night before coming out to the coast.

THE OWNERS

Jussi and Netta Paavoseppä own the Barö and lead it as a family-owned project. Their direction is clear: ecological construction, high-level food, Nordic design, year-round archipelago travel and a version of comfort that still respects the site.

Jussi had been interested in modular ecological building and saw accommodation as a way to test that idea properly. The result is visible across the property: cabins placed carefully in the landscape, raised walkways, solid wood structures, limited disturbance to the ground and interiors designed around the view.

Netta’s role brings the hospitality story forward, especially around sustainability, communication, partnerships and the wider identity of The Barö. Together, they have turned a quiet corner of Barösund into one of Finland’s most distinctive small hotels.

Activities can include hiking, cycling, canoeing, boating, seasonal nature experiences, yoga, massages and local food or drink experiences, depending on season and availability.

The hotel holds Green Key and Sustainable Travel Finland certification and is part of Hotel for Trees.

Guest cars remain in the parking area. Guests can reach the hotel on foot, with electric transport available when needed.

Some pet-friendly rooms are available on request for an additional fee.
