THE SETTING

Hortas do Rio sits just outside the village of Carrapateira. This is still the Algarve, but not the Algarve of big resorts, beach clubs and crowded promenades. Here, the road leads towards dunes, cliffs, surf beaches and the protected landscapes of the Costa Vicentina.

The house stands on land once used for small-scale farming: vegetable gardens, animals, vines, simple rural buildings. That memory is still part of the place. The name says it directly — hortas by the river — and the setting still feels close to the land.

Carrapateira is a small village with one foot in the fields and one foot in the sea. Bordeira Beach is nearby, wide and open, with dunes behind it and the river meeting the Atlantic. Amado Beach is also close and better known for surfing. Between the two, the coastline feels rougher and quieter than most people expect from the Algarve.

Hortas do Rio keeps things simple: low buildings, straw details, outdoor spaces, a small pool, a covered veranda and rooms opening towards the garden. It is a place for guests who want the beach, but not the noise around it.

THE ROOMS

There are seven double rooms, each around 22 m², with a private bathroom and shower. Each room has a private terrace with a small table and chairs. The style is simple and natural: white walls, soft colours, wood, woven textures, and enough comfort without making the place feel overdesigned. It fits the setting. You come here for Carrapateira, the beaches, the slow mornings and the air outside.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served in the kitchen and covered veranda area. It is the main food moment of the stay: coffee, bread, fruit, local products, something sweet, something fresh, and enough time to start the day slowly.

There is no restaurant at Hortas do Rio. Instead, the house has a common room with an honesty bar, open throughout the day. It keeps the atmosphere relaxed: a drink after the beach, something simple in the evening, no formal service. For lunch and dinner, Carrapateira has small restaurants and cafés nearby. This is a good area for fish, seafood, simple Portuguese cooking and post-surf meals that do not need to be complicated.

THE STAY

The stay is mostly outside. There is a pool/tank for hot days, a garden, a terrace, the breakfast veranda and the honesty bar in the common room. Hortas do Rio also works well for active days. Bikes can be arranged, and the surrounding roads and tracks are easy to explore.

But the best use of the place may be simpler: have a late breakfast, walk or ride towards Bordeira, come back sandy, swim, sit outside, have a drink, and let the day stay loose. This is not a hotel with a long list of facilities. It is a small country house in the right place.

AROUND HORTAS DO RIO

Carrapateira sits inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, one of the least built-up parts of the Algarve coast. Bordeira Beach is the closest big landmark. It is a huge beach, backed by dunes and cliffs, with the Ribeira da Carrapateira running into the Atlantic. Even in busier months, the beach’s scale helps it breathe. Amado Beach is also nearby and is one of the better-known surf beaches in the area. Surf schools, board hire and lessons are easy to find around Carrapateira.

The Pontal da Carrapateira route is one of the best ways to see the coast: cliffs, viewpoints, boardwalks, dunes, sea, wind, and long views over the Atlantic. The area is also part of the Rota Vicentina, so walking and cycling can become part of the stay without much planning.

Sagres, Vila do Bispo, Aljezur, Arrifana and Praia da Murração are all within reach by car. But Carrapateira itself is enough for a few days if the goal is the beach, surfing, walks, and quiet.

THE OWNERS

Hortas do Rio is run by Filipe and a small team. The place still feels close to its farming past, but the stay is easy: breakfast, bikes, packed lunches, beach advice, restaurant tips, and someone around when you need help. That kind of hosting matters in Carrapateira. The village is small, the beaches are spread out, and the best days often depend on simple advice: which beach to choose, where to eat, when to walk, where the wind is better, which road to take.

Hortas do Rio feels like Filipe’s project rather than a brand. That is probably why the house has kept such a relaxed, human scale.

GOOD TO KNOW

There are seven double rooms, all around 22 m². One room is adapted for guests with reduced mobility or special needs. Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 11:00. There is no restaurant, but guests can use the honesty bar in the common room. The house accepts adults and children aged 12 and older. Pets are not accepted.

Bordeira Beach is around 1 km away, and Amado Beach is a short drive from the house. A car is useful, especially for exploring the wider Costa Vicentina.
