THE SETTING

Hotel Iturregi sits in Askizu, the hilltop neighbourhood above Getaria. From here, the coast opens in two directions: vineyards and green slopes behind the house, the Cantabrian Sea in front, and the fishing town below. The building is an old Basque farmhouse, restored and opened as a small hotel in 2007. It keeps the broad white façade, large windows, stone details and quiet rural position of the original caserío, then adds a more polished interior language: classic furniture, warmer rooms, soft colours and enough silence around the house to feel removed from the coast below.

Getaria gives the stay its character. This is a small town with a large story: birthplace of Cristóbal Balenciaga and Juan Sebastián Elcano, home to one of the Basque coast’s great fishing harbours, and surrounded by txakoli vineyards that run almost to the sea.

Iturregi is close to all of that, without sitting inside the movement of town. Guests wake above the coast, spend the day between beaches, bodegas and restaurants, then return to the hill when the light starts dropping over the water.

THE ROOMS

There are eight rooms: six rooms and two suites, named after places along the Basque coast. Some look towards the sea, with balconies, big windows and views across the Cantabrian. Others face the garden, pool and green slopes around Askizu. The difference is simple: sea rooms for the full coastal feeling, mountain rooms for a softer countryside mood.

The rooms are individually decorated, with a mix of classic pieces, patterned fabrics, four-poster beds, bathtubs, balconies, reading corners and large bathrooms. Jaizkibel has a bathtub placed for the view towards the small peninsula of Getaria. Igeldo has a balcony that works well for breakfast outside. Zarautz sits under sloping ceilings, with the sea framed from the sofa.

The Getaria Suite is the most complete sea-facing room, with a four-poster bed, private balcony and one of the strongest views in the house. On the mountain side, Zumaia feels bright and calm, Askizu has sharper oriental touches, and the Iturregi Suite looks towards the pool, the slopes and the small village of Askizu beyond.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served à la carte and includes coffee, bread, fruit, eggs, local products, maybe breakfast outside when the weather is kind. The house is quiet in the morning, and the coast has not yet filled with day plans.

There is no restaurant at Iturregi, which is easy to accept in Getaria. The town is one of the great food stops of the Basque coast, especially for grilled fish. A dinner around turbot, anchovies, txakoli and the harbour is part of the reason to come.

The hotel also has an honesty bar and a wine selection for quieter moments back at the house. Iturregi now produces its own txakoli under the Getariako Txakolina denomination, including small-production white wines made from Hondarrabi Zuri.

THE STAY

The pool sits in the garden, with the old farmhouse and green slopes around it. After a morning in Getaria or a swim at Zarautz, it gives the day a quieter second half. Inside, the reading room and shared spaces keep the mood calm. Guests can have a drink, read, work quietly, or wait for evening before driving down to dinner.

For most stays, the rhythm is simpler. Breakfast above the sea, a drive along the coast, lunch in a fishing town, a walk through vines, a swim, then dinner nearby. Iturregi gives the Basque coast breathing space.

AROUND HOTEL ITURREGI

Getaria is the first stop: harbour, old streets, grilled fish restaurants, the Balenciaga Museum and the walk towards San Antón, the small peninsula known locally as the Mouse of Getaria.

Zarautz is nearby for its long beach, surf and promenade. Zumaia brings the Flysch cliffs, one of the most dramatic geological landscapes on this stretch of coast. San Sebastián is close enough for pintxos, markets, shopping and a bigger city day.

The surrounding hills are txakoli country. Bodegas, vineyard roads and small tasting rooms sit close to the hotel, with Hondarrabi Zuri vines trained on slopes facing the sea.

The wider Basque Country opens easily from here: Bilbao, Hondarribia, the French Basque coast, cider houses, Michelin-starred restaurants, small ports and coastal drives. Iturregi works especially well for travellers who want San Sebastián within reach, but prefer to sleep somewhere quieter.
