THE SETTING

Heredad Beragu sits in Gallipienzo Antiguo, one of those small hilltop villages that seem to belong more to the landscape than to the present day. Built in stone, crowned by its church and almost suspended above the Foz Verde of the Aragón River, the village looks directly towards the Kaparreta Nature Reserve — a protected natural area of cliffs, river, birds and wild vegetation.

This is not the Navarra most travellers know first. It is quieter, more rural, more surprising. Pamplona is around 55 km away, but the feeling here is far from the city: narrow medieval streets, old houses, and a sense of being somewhere with very little noise.

Heredad Beragu was created by joining and restoring four old village houses. The name itself is rooted in local history. A “heredad” was once a rural estate made up of a farmhouse, stables, granary, cellar and even a mill; Beragu refers to the hill on which Gallipienzo stands. That idea of recovering the place’s memory runs throughout the whole hotel.

The restoration was carried out with a strong ecological approach, using a high proportion of recovered materials and keeping the old structures visible: stone, timber, lime mortar, handmade clay tiles, old brick and traditional textures. Inside, the atmosphere is warm, contemporary and carefully designed, with large windows opening towards the reserve and enough comfort to make the remoteness feel easy.

THE ROOMS

There are nine rooms at Heredad Beragu, each with its own character and a name linked to the old trades, spaces and ways of life of the village: Beragu Origen, El Molino, La Bodega, La Fragua, Los Almadieros, La Capilla, El Hogar, La Herbolera and La Almazara.

The rooms are personal, bright and full of texture. Some have balconies or terraces, many look towards the Foz Verde and the Kaparreta Nature Reserve, and almost all keep some link to the building’s original structure. Stone walls, wooden beams, restored materials, simple colours and carefully chosen details give each room its own mood.

Sizes range from more compact doubles to the larger Beragu Origen room, which has double balconies overlooking the landscape. The best rooms are the ones facing the reserve, where the landscape becomes almost cinematic: cliffs, river, birds, changing light and the sense of a valley below.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served at the table in a mini-buffet style, prepared with care and made with fresh, local, and homemade ingredients. Expect village bread with olive oil from Gallipienzo, homemade jams, daily cakes made with organic ingredients, eggs, tortillas, bacon, local cheese, artisan charcuterie, homemade yoghurt, pastries, fresh juices and smoothies.

Dinner follows the same philosophy: seasonal, local and rooted in Navarra. The kitchen works with products from nearby producers, markets and the hotel’s own organic garden when possible. The menu changes with the season, but the spirit remains the same — honest cooking, good ingredients and a strong sense of territory.

Typical dishes may include vegetables from the garden, baked local cheese, green asparagus with Roncal cheese, seasonal stews, Navarra beef and other regional products. The hotel is also connected to Reyno Gourmet, which highlights certified products from Navarra’s denominations of origin, protected geographical indications, artisan foods and organic production.

THE STAY

The experience at Heredad Beragu is built around the house, the view and the feeling of being held inside the village. There is a living room with a fireplace, large windows facing the landscape, shared corners for reading or having a drink, a terrace, a small garden, and the quiet rhythm of a place designed for adults.

Sustainability is not treated as decoration here. Heating and hot water are powered by biomass and solar energy; the hotel follows systematic recycling practices, and a circularity plan has been introduced to further reduce waste.

One of the most interesting experiences is the Beragu Wine Experience, created with Bodegas Caudalía. It combines a stay at the hotel with a winery visit, a wine tasting, a paired dinner, and a closer look at local wine culture. For guests who want to understand Navarra through food and wine, it gives the stay a more complete sense of place.

AROUND HEREDAD BERAGU

Gallipienzo Antiguo is small, but its surroundings are rich. The village deserves time: stone streets, quiet corners, old houses, views over the Aragón River, the Church of San Pedro, the Church of San Salvador and the Romanesque crypt of Santa Margarita.

The natural setting is just as important. The Kaparreta Nature Reserve was designated a protected area in the 1980s and is part of a wider landscape of cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation, and river habitats. It is also a strong area for birdwatching, with species such as griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, peregrine falcons, eagle owls, golden eagles and Bonelli’s eagles.

Walking is one of the best ways to explore the area. From the hotel, guests can follow routes around Gallipienzo, the Aragón River, the Foz Verde, the old bridge, the bird observatory and sections of historic paths such as the GR1. The landscape is perfect for slow hiking, nature photography and quiet observation rather than hard adventure.

The wider area also opens towards some of Navarra’s most beautiful cultural stops: Ujué, Sangüesa, Olite, Ayesa, Lerga and the Santa Criz de Eslava archaeological site. For travellers continuing through Navarra, the Bardenas Reales are also within reach for a longer day out, offering a completely different landscape of desert-like formations and open horizons.

THE OWNERS

Heredad Beragu is the project of Patxi and Ramón. They first fell for Gallipienzo Antiguo as visitors, drawn by the village, the landscape and the feeling that this forgotten hilltop place deserved to be lived in again. Their project was never only about opening a hotel. It was about bringing together hospitality, sustainability, local food, heritage and a different kind of tourism for rural Navarra.

Their way of hosting is personal and deeply connected to the territory. Patxi and Ramón want guests to understand the land, not just admire the view. They share routes, recommend places, explain local products, organise experiences and bring guests closer to the nature, wine, food and history around them.

GOOD TO KNOW

Heredad Beragu is for adults-only and does not accept pets. The hotel has private parking with limited spaces, plus nearby public parking. Dinner should be booked before 18:00. Breakfast is usually served from 08:30 to 10:00, and dinner from 20:00 to 21:00. The building is historic, with uneven levels and village access, so it may not be ideal for guests with reduced mobility.

Prices start from around €130 per night, depending on season and room type.
