THE SETTING

Palazzo Piccinno is a boutique guesthouse in Parabita, a small town in southern Puglia, close to Gallipoli and well placed between the Ionian and Adriatic coasts. It is not in one of Salento’s obvious seaside addresses, and that is part of the point. Here, you stay in a real town with cafés, churches, local shops, and evening life around you, while the beaches are close enough for easy day trips.

The house is an early 20th-century neo-Gothic palazzo. Richard and Marco restored it with local artisans, keeping the bones of the building visible: high vaulted ceilings, original cement tiles, archways, old doors and generous windows. The result is polished, but not anonymous. You still feel the scale and personality of the original home.

Behind the façade, the palazzo opens onto a courtyard garden with a pool, banana trees, loungers, and corners for breakfast, reading, or a late drink. It is small, adults-only and personal, better suited to travellers who want Puglia with texture: beaches, food, design, town life and hosts who know where to send you.

THE ROOMS

There are four rooms and suites, all individual and each linked to a different part of Salento’s landscape or history. The original architecture does much of the work: vaulted ceilings, patterned floors, thick walls and large openings that bring in light from the town.

Oliveto Suite is the largest, with green accents, a frescoed vaulted ceiling, a private balcony and a spacious bathroom with both a walk-in shower and a circular freestanding bath. Magna Grecia Premium is more graphic and restrained, with original floors, a sitting area and references to the Greek heritage that still runs through parts of Salento. Primitivo Terrace Room is the one to choose if you want outdoor space: it has a private 25 m² terrace overlooking the pool garden. Terra Rossa Cosy is smaller and warmer in mood, with red-earth tones, original tiles and a quiet view onto the town.

FOOD & BREAKFAST

Breakfast is one of the strongest parts of the stay. It is not a buffet-style hotel breakfast, but a cooked-to-order morning ritual created with chef Marco Cataldo, using local and seasonal ingredients. Expect a changing mix of sweet and savoury elements: focaccia, fruit, cakes, local cheeses, charcuterie and small dishes with a more creative twist.

Depending on the day and the weather, breakfast can be served in the garden, on the terrace or more privately. Special dietary requirements can be arranged in advance, including gluten-free, lactose-free and vegetarian options.

Guests may also enjoy complimentary aperitivo evenings in the courtyard, often accompanied by piano performances or local cocktails under the stars.

THE STAY

Palazzo Piccinno is made for slow days. The garden pool is the centre of the house in summer: a place to read, cool off, have a drink or stay longer than planned after breakfast. There is also a lobby area with a piano and seating, an honesty bar, a pool bar during the day, and several corners that make the palazzo feel lived-in. There is no 24-hour reception, but guests have a dedicated round-the-clock concierge line for planning, reservations and local help. The team can arrange massages, sound bath sessions, boat days, private dinners, beach plans, and other details that make sense for the trip.

Selected evenings bring another side of the place: social hours, piano moments, local artists, or drinks shared between guests and locals. Nothing feels forced. It is more about opening a door into local life.

AROUND PALAZZO PICCINNO

Parabita is a smart base for this part of Puglia because it keeps you away from the busiest coastal addresses while still giving you quick access to both sea and town life. Gallipoli is close for its old port, fish market, historic centre and beach clubs. Baia Verde, Punta della Suina and Santa Maria al Bagno are easy Ionian options, while Otranto and the Adriatic side make sense for a longer day out.

This is also a good place for travellers who like mixing days at the sea with proper local food and baroque towns. Lecce, Galatina, Nardò, Gallipoli and Otranto can all fit into the wider itinerary, depending on how much driving you want to do. The hosts also help guests explore beyond the obvious beaches. For Marco and Richard—veterans of luxury travel—Palazzo Piccinno is their vision of “home” in Puglia. Their idea of hospitality is based on connection rather than over-service. They bring local friends and makers into the palazzo, support nearby restaurants and artisans, and help guests see the region through people rather than through a list of sights. That is what gives the stay its character.

GOOD TO KNOW

Palazzo Piccinno is adults-only, making it ideal for couples, solo travellers, or friends seeking a quiet base in Salento. Small pets up to 6 kg may be accepted with advance notice and an extra cleaning fee. Public parking is available free of charge near the palazzo, and transfers from Brindisi or Bari airports can be arranged. Rates usually start from around €260 per night, depending on the season and room category.
