THE SETTING

Casa Idalia sits on a quiet street in the village of Comporta. From the house, you can walk to restaurants, small shops, the grocery store and the cafés of the village. The beach is around 2 km away, close enough for a long walk or an easy bike ride.

The house is a typical Portuguese village home, whitewashed and simple from the outside, with a small pool courtyard hidden behind it. It does not try to compete with the large villas and private estates that made Comporta famous. Its charm is more direct: stay in the village, wake up slowly, rent a bike, go through the rice fields, come back for a swim.

Lou and Charly found the house after their first visit to Comporta. It had belonged to Madame Idalia, whose name they kept for the project. That small detail works well here. Casa Idalia feels like a house with a previous life, now opened by two people who wanted something lighter, more creative and closer to guests.

Comporta gives the rest of the atmosphere: rice fields, storks, pine trees, long beaches, sandy roads, low houses and a rhythm that still feels different from the usual beach destinations.

THE ROOMS

Casa Idalia has six double rooms, all designed for two guests. They are small, around 11-17 m², so this is not a place for travellers looking for oversized bedrooms. Several are upstairs, with balconies overlooking the street, rooftops, pine trees, or the pool. Room 1 sits on the ground floor with a pool view, while Room 6 is in a garden outbuilding, with the pool on one side and a private terrace on the other.

The decoration follows the spirit of Comporta: natural colours, vintage pieces, white walls, woven textures and a relaxed coastal mood. Bathrooms include Memorice products with notes of tobacco leaf, almond and honey.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served in the outdoor kitchen, under the shaded pergola. It is simple and local: fresh fruit juice, seasonal fruit, local bread, ham, butter, cheese, jams and a few changing extras.

There is no restaurant at Casa Idalia, which suits the place’s size. During the day, guests can walk to the village restaurants in a couple of minutes, or cycle towards the beach for lunch by the water.

In the evening, the bar opens between 6 and 8pm. Guests can have a glass of local wine, a house cocktail or an aperitif board by the pool. It is one of the nicest moments of the day here: sandy feet, warm light, something to drink, and no need to go far before dinner.

THE STAY

Most of the stay happens around the courtyard. The pool is small but enough for cooling off after the beach. The pergola becomes the breakfast room in the morning, a shaded corner during the day, and the natural place to meet before going out in the evening.

There is also a small shop inside the house. Lou’s atelier brings another layer to Casa Idalia: leather goods from her Lou Chartres brand, Memorice body and home products, posters, tote bags, candles, sprays and craft pieces selected from artists and makers connected to the area.

Bikes can be rented directly at the house, either for half a day or a full day. From the village, you can ride through rice-field paths towards Carrasqueira, the beach, or simply out into the flat landscape around Comporta.

The house can also be booked entirely, which makes sense for a group of friends who want the feel of a private village home with breakfast, a pool, and local guidance.

AROUND CASA IDALIA

Comporta is easy to understand once you start moving slowly. The village is small, the rice fields begin close by, and the Atlantic sits just beyond the dunes. The landscape changes with the seasons: water in the fields, green shoots, golden tones, birds, storks and big open skies.

Comporta Beach is the closest beach, around 2 km from Casa Idalia. It belongs to the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve and features dunes, a pine forest, and a long stretch of sand. Carvalhal, Pego and other beaches along the coast are also easy to reach by car. Carrasqueira is close too, especially interesting for its old wooden stilt pier, the Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira. It is one of the most recognisable places in the region, but still feels connected to fishing life rather than made only for visitors.

Days can be very simple: beach in the morning, lunch by the dunes, bike ride through the rice fields, pool in the afternoon, aperitif at home, dinner in the village. For more, there are boat trips on the Sado Estuary, horse riding, Tróia, Melides, and Alcácer do Sal.

THE OWNERS

Casa Idalia is the project of Lou and Charly, a French couple who left their previous lives after discovering Comporta. Charly came from a sales background and wanted a project focused on interacting with people. Lou is a fashion accessory designer, and the house gave her space for both interiors and her own atelier. That mix explains the place: part guesthouse, part creative house, part village base.

Casa Idalia works because it feels close to them. Lou’s taste is in the rooms and shop. Charly’s hospitality is in the welcome and aperitif hour. Together, they have made a small house that feels relaxed, useful and personal without trying too hard.

GOOD TO KNOW

There are six double rooms at Casa Idalia. Some rooms have balconies, and Room 6 has a garden setting with a private terrace. Casa Idalia also offers Casinha Rosalia in Carrasqueira, a separate 45 m² apartment for up to four guests, with a small terrace, living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.

The property is adults-only. Pets are not accepted. Bicycles can be rented directly at the house. Current rates shown are €8 for half a day and €15 for a full day.

Prices start at €180 per night, depending on season and room type.
