ISLAND LIFE

A Casa Reale

Bastia - France
Viceroys, novelists, and a young Bonaparte have all slept behind this door on Bastia’s market square. This boutique guesthouse keeps their stories close — four rooms, three centuries, one very good breakfast.

THE SETTING

Bastia sits on Corsica’s northeastern coast, at the foot of Cap Corse, its old port and citadel rising above the Mediterranean in a tangle of ochre façades and green shutters. A Casa Reale occupies the second floor of a mansion built in 1700 by the De Battisti family, right on the Place du Marché — Bastia’s market square, still busy with stalls of local cheese, charcuterie and pastries every weekend morning.

The building has carried plenty of history since. In 1748, the Marquis de Cursay set up the island’s first printing house here, producing Corsica’s earliest constitution. It later passed to the Count of Marbeuf, then briefly to Sir Gilbert Elliot, viceroy of the short-lived Anglo-Corsican Kingdom — his initials are still worked into the wrought-iron balcony railing outside what’s now the Grey Room. By the 19th century, the house had become a hotel in its own right, one where Gustave Flaubert and Prosper Mérimée are both said to have stayed.

THE ROOMS

Four rooms, each named for a colour and carrying a story of its own. The Blue Room is dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, who spent his last night in Corsica here in 1778, in a house then owned by his godfather, before leaving for military school in France. Empire-style furniture, a fireplace and a framed reproduction of Bonaparte at the Pont d’Arcole set the tone. The Grey Room, smaller and quieter, was once Gilbert Elliot’s private library. French windows open straight onto the Mediterranean, and his monogrammed balcony railing survives as one of the building’s few original features.

The Yellow Room is the brightest, entered through a glass-walled hall with views over the Quai des Martyrs and the sea, and named for Corsican military leader Pascal Paoli. The Green Room, upstairs and the most private of the four, looks out over the port and the breakfast terrace below. All four run 35 to 40 square metres, generous for a guesthouse this size, mixing vintage furnishings and family antiques with king-size beds and modern bathrooms.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is homemade and Corsican through and through: pancakes, crêpes and brioches, local cheeses, fresh fruit, and Nucellina, a Corsican hazelnut spread that turns up on the table alongside homemade jams. It arrives either on the wisteria-draped terrace overlooking the sea or in the dining room downstairs, and it’s the kind of breakfast people remember long after the stay is over.

There’s no restaurant on site, but the sitting room does double duty as a spot for an evening glass of Corsican wine, and the team can point guests toward tastings around the island. Central Bastia is a five-minute walk away for dinner, with Le Divino, a French-Corsican restaurant, practically on the doorstep.

THE STAY

The salon is the heart of the house: a library, a grand piano dating to 1904 — originally intended as a gift for Belgium’s King Leopold — and enough antiques and portraits to make three centuries of history feel present, not staged. Outside, the terrace is where most evenings end, wisteria overhead and the port spread out below.

Concierge service handles the practical side: restaurant bookings, wine tours, day trips into Cap Corse. The rest of the stay runs on the kind of quiet attentiveness a four-room house makes possible — the sort of place where whoever brings your breakfast in the morning already knows the town well enough to point you in the right direction for the rest of the day.

AROUND A CASA REALE

Bastia’s old port and citadel are close enough to reach on foot within ten minutes, and worth losing an afternoon to — the citadel’s museums, the Oratoire de l’Immaculée-Conception, Bastia Cathedral and the 18th-century Palais des Gouverneurs are among the highlights. On weekend mornings, the market outside the door fills with Corsican cheese, charcuterie and pastries, as good a way as any to get a feel for the island’s food before venturing further.

North of town, Cap Corse unfolds in a loop of narrow coastal roads, hidden coves and villages that see far fewer visitors than the rest of Corsica — worth a full day, ideally with stops for a swim and a proper Corsican lunch. Wine tastings can be arranged around the island’s vineyards, most a short drive from Bastia.

Bastia Poretta Airport is about 20 minutes away by car, with direct flights from the UK, mainland France and other parts of Europe. The town’s train station is a 10-minute walk away, with connections south to Ajaccio and Bonifacio, or west across the island to Calvi.

THE OWNERS

Philippe and Jeremy bought A Casa Reale with the idea of turning a fading, storied building back into a home, not just a hotel — restoring the stuccoes and ironwork, tracking down period antiques, and letting three centuries of history stay visible instead of polishing it away.

Their approach shows in the details: the reproduction of Bonaparte’s portrait in the Blue Room, the salvaged ironwork in the Grey Room, the grand piano that never quite made it to Belgium.

Day to day, it’s Rose who runs the house. She manages the property and cooks breakfast herself each morning — reason enough on its own to book a room here.
