THE SETTING

Trullo Matteo sits in the countryside of Francavilla Fontana, close to Ostuni, in Puglia’s Valle d’Itria. This is inland Puglia at its most recognisable: trulli with conical roofs, dry-stone walls, red earth, olive groves, white hill towns and narrow roads that seem made for unplanned detours. The coast is close, yet the mood here is rural first — cicadas, stone, dust, warm light and long hours outside.

The house stands on over one hectare of land, surrounded by olive trees and a Mediterranean garden. It brings together two traditional Puglian forms: a trullo, the dry-stone cone-shaped building that has become the symbol of the region, and a lamia, the low rural structure found across this part of the countryside.

The result is a house that works especially well for families or friends. Five bedrooms, five bathrooms, garden entrances, terraces, pool, kitchen, barbecue, shade, silence — everything is arranged for a week that can be spent mostly at home, with towns and beaches added when the group feels like moving.

THE ROOMS

Trullo Matteo sleeps up to 10 guests across five bedrooms, each with bathroom and direct access from the garden. That garden access changes the rhythm of the house. Guests can wake at different hours, come back from the pool, take a nap or step outside for coffee without crossing the main living spaces.

One bedroom sits inside the trullo, under the old stone cone. It gives the house its most Puglian moment: thick walls, soft light, the feeling of sleeping inside a piece of local architecture. The lamia holds the larger living spaces and other bedrooms. Two rooms can also be used together as a larger family setup, giving flexibility for children or guests who prefer to stay close.

The interiors are simple and warm: pale stone, white bedding, wooden doors, natural tones, some stronger decorative pieces and enough comfort for a proper summer stay. Nothing needs to shout. The garden and the old structures already give the house its character.

THE STAY

The saltwater pool sits among lawn and olive trees, with loungers, a garden shower and open countryside around it. There are two terraces: one open to the sun, one covered for shade. Meals, cards, books, aperitivo, children drifting in and out, someone staying by the pool until the last possible minute — the house is set up for that loose rhythm.

Inside, the open kitchen, dining area and living space keep the practical side easy. The kitchen is equipped for market shopping, simple lunches and dinners at home. A bean-to-cup coffee machine, laundry room, board games and outdoor speaker add the kind of details guests actually use during a full week.

Extra help can be arranged when wanted. Basic shopping can be prepared before arrival, cleaning can be added during the stay, and a typical local meal can be organised at the house with advance notice.

AROUND TRULLO MATTEO

The Valle d’Itria is one of the best areas in Puglia for a villa week. The distances stay manageable, and the days can move between hill towns, food stops, beaches and countryside drives.

Ceglie Messapica is only around 7 km away and is one of the best local towns for food. Ostuni, the white city on the hill, is around 15 km away. Cisternino, Martina Franca and Locorotondo bring the classic Valle d’Itria circuit: old centres, white lanes, terraces, small shops and countryside views.

Alberobello is around 41 km away for the famous trulli landscape. Monopoli and Polignano a Mare give the Adriatic version of Puglia: ports, limestone coast, sea caves, summer evenings by the water.

The Adriatic is the closest coast, with Torre Canne and Savelletri around 30 minutes away. The Ionian side takes longer and rewards the effort with wider sandy beaches and clearer turquoise water around places like Punta Prosciutto.

THE OWNERS

Trullo Matteo belongs to Sylvie, a French owner-host who spent much of her life travelling before choosing Puglia as the place to settle a little. She spent years looking for the right house. The region won her over through its small villages, warm community and the particular feeling of the Puglian countryside. When she found Trullo Matteo, the search ended. The name is personal too: Matteo is a nod to her son.
