San Calisto

Popoli - Italy

Three rooms among the Valle Reale vineyards, where Abruzzo starts to feel wilder and more mountainous. Old Montepulciano, deep silence, and the feeling of staying in a wine estate far from the usual Italian route.

THE SETTING

San Calisto sits outside Popoli, in Abruzzo, surrounded by the vineyards of Valle Reale. The house is small, rural and quiet, with the mountains close enough to change the air. This is a different kind of Italian wine landscape. The vines grow at around 350 metres above sea level, between the Majella, Gran Sasso and Sirente-Velino parks. Days can be hot, nights can be cold, and the grapes ripen slowly in a valley shaped by mountain wind.

The Valle Reale story began in 1998, when the Pizzolo family decided to recover an old Montepulciano d’Abruzzo vineyard on the property. That vineyard was San Calisto: eight hectares planted in 1960 in the traditional pergola abruzzese system, later used as the starting point for the estate’s wider work with Montepulciano. The guesthouse came later, as a way to let travellers stay inside that landscape rather than simply visit the winery. It is a two-level country house with just three bedrooms, surrounded by vines, vegetable gardens and the wooded nature of the Abruzzo parks.

Nothing here feels like a large wine resort. It is closer to a private foresteria: a few rooms, breakfast from the kitchen, a proper wine tasting, and the feeling of being far from the usual Italian itinerary.

THE ROOMS

There are two rooms and one suite: San Calisto, Vigneto Sant’Eusanio and Vigna del Convento.
San Calisto is the largest, about 50 m², with a super king-size bed, large shower, sitting area and views towards the vines. It feels more like a small apartment than a bedroom, with space to read, work or listen to music. Vigneto Sant’Eusanio is arranged over two levels. The bedroom is below, while the bathroom sits upstairs under the roof, finished in stone and wood. Vigna del Convento is smaller, around 25 m², but has the best outdoor detail: a private terrace overlooking the vineyard, with a small table where breakfast can be served.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is prepared each morning by the cook. It is sweet and savoury, with homemade cakes, crostate, biscuits and bread, all made with local organic ingredients. Valle Reale also has its own organic vegetable garden and small orchard, so breakfast changes with the season: fruit, homemade jams, and whatever the garden gives at the time.

There is no restaurant at San Calisto. The food experience is more about breakfast, small local products during the tasting, and the places the team can recommend nearby for lunch or dinner. The wine tasting adds the strongest food-and-drink moment of the stay. It includes Valle Reale wines and selected local products, so guests can understand Abruzzo through both the glass and the table.

THE STAY

The main experience at San Calisto is the wine. A private tasting is included in the room rate and lasts around two hours. Guests visit the vineyards, explore the historical archive, and taste Valle Reale wines paired with local products. The old vineyard gave Valle Reale its first cru and became the source of the Montepulciano material later used for new plantings around Popoli.

The house itself stays quiet: terrace, vineyard views, space to read, music in the rooms, breakfast outside when the weather allows. There is no pool, no spa, no long list of services. The point is simpler: stay among the vines, understand the winery, then use the place as a base for Abruzzo.

AROUND SAN CALISTO

Popoli is a practical base for exploring this part of Abruzzo. Sulmona is close, with its old streets, confetti tradition and mountain setting. The Majella National Park is also within easy reach, with walking routes, villages, hermitages and wide mountain landscapes.

Rocca Calascio is around 37 km away and makes a strong day trip, especially for guests who want one of Abruzzo’s most dramatic hilltop views. The Tirino River is another nearby highlight, known for its clear water and canoe trips.

This part of Abruzzo is good for travellers who like moving between wine, small towns and nature. One day can be vineyards and tasting. Another can be Sulmona and the mountain roads. Another can be canoeing, hiking or driving towards the high villages. It is not the obvious Italy. That is the appeal.

THE OWNERS

San Calisto belongs to Valle Reale, the wine estate developed by the Pizzolo family. Their work began with the recovery of the old San Calisto vineyard and grew into a larger agricultural project centred on mountain viticulture, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and respect for the surrounding parks.

Day-to-day, the welcome is handled by Alessia and the team. With their warm hospitality and dedication, they go the extra mile to make each moment unforgettable, curating an experience of pure bliss in this charming slice of Abruzzo’s natural paradise.
