THE SETTING

Âmago sits in Santa Bárbara de Nexe, a village just north of Faro. The airport is close, but the house feels removed from the usual arrival-and-beach routine. You reach it through small inland roads, with dry-stone walls, carob trees, white houses and the sea somewhere beyond the hills.

The property was once an equestrian centre, with traces of that past still visible in the walls and old stone details. Liz and Alex found it in 2019, after years of coming to the Algarve through Alex’s family connection to the region. The renovation began in 2022, and the guesthouse opened in summer 2023.

The name says a lot: uma casa lenta, a slow house. The idea is simple — six rooms, a garden, a saltwater pool, breakfast outside, good local tips, and enough space to stop planning every hour of the day. The design keeps to the Algarve’s older language: white walls, natural textures, terracotta tones, timber, handmade textiles, Portuguese craftwork by local artists. Nothing feels heavy. The house is clean, open, warm and easy to live in for a few days.

THE ROOMS

There are six double rooms, all designed for two guests. Each has a super king-size bed, private bathroom, air conditioning and heating, mini fridge, beach towels, 8950 toiletries and underfloor heating in the bathroom. Rooms 1, 2 and 3 look towards the south-facing terrace and pool. Room 4 is larger and has its own small kitchen, making it useful for longer stays or guests travelling with an infant. Rooms 5 and 6 sit on the quieter northern side of the property; Room 6 also has a private outdoor terrace.

The rooms are spacious but simple. Whitewashed walls, handmade textiles, old beams, open wardrobes, large bathrooms and a few carefully chosen pieces. The decoration does not shout. It gives the room enough character, then lets the light, garden and pool do the rest.

Each room feels slightly different, but the mood stays the same: calm, natural, uncluttered.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served on the terrace. It is continental, with coffee, fruit, pastries, bread, eggs and simple morning things done properly. The kind of breakfast that works best outside, before the heat arrives.

There is no restaurant at Âmago. The house serves breakfast and drinks, then points guests towards the right places for lunch and dinner. The honesty bar is open during the day, serving soft drinks, snacks, Portuguese wines by the glass or by the bottle, complimentary filtered water, tea, and espresso. It keeps the house relaxed: a drink by the pool, something small before going out, no formal service around it.

Liz and Alex’s recommendations are part of the food experience. Markets, seafood, small restaurants, local wine bars — the stay works better when you ask them where to go.

THE STAY

Most of the stay takes place between the terrace, garden, and pool. The saltwater pool is lined with sun loungers, and the grounds have smaller corners for reading, coffee or doing nothing for a while. Massages, facials, and other treatments can be booked on-site. Artist residencies and collaborations also form part of the Âmago story, with works by invited artists left in the house over time.

The rhythm is easy: breakfast on the terrace, a swim, a few hours exploring, back for the pool, then dinner somewhere local. It is not a place built around activities. It is a small base that helps you make the most of the Algarve.

AROUND ÂMAGO CASA LENTA

The location is one of the useful things about Âmago. You are inland, but close to many of the places that make the central and eastern Algarve interesting.

Faro is around 15 to 20 minutes away, with its old town, marina, small streets and access to the Ria Formosa. Loulé is nearby too, especially good for its market, old centre and craft shops. Olhão is another easy trip, with seafood restaurants, tiled houses, the waterfront and boats towards the barrier islands. Santa Bárbara de Nexe itself has a quieter village feel, with local restaurants, small shops and a 15th-century church. From the house, guests can move between inland villages, beaches, markets, and lagoon landscapes without needing to take long drives.

The beaches are close enough by car, but Âmago is not a beach hotel. It is better for travellers who want the Algarve with a bit more distance: mornings in the hills, afternoons by the sea, dinners in local towns, and no need to sleep in the middle of the coast.

THE OWNERS

Âmago is run by Liz and Alex Harvey. They spent years in London before moving to Portugal, after many visits to the Algarve through Alex’s family holidays. They found the property in 2019, when it still needed serious work. The renovation kept parts of the old equestrian centre and introduced new infrastructure, whitewashed walls, landscaped grounds, and interiors designed with people such as Jade from Escolhido and Mariana from Amidst Studios.

Their hosting is a big part of the stay. They know the local restaurants, beaches, markets and small towns, and share those tips without turning the house into a formal hotel. That balance is probably why Âmago works. It feels designed, but still personal. Quiet, but not anonymous.

GOOD TO KNOW

There are six double rooms, all for two guests. Room 4 is the only room with a kitchen and the only room that can welcome an infant under 12 months. Children aged 13 and older are accepted. Pets are not accepted.

Breakfast is included. There is no restaurant on-site, but the hosts share local recommendations for lunch, dinner, beaches, bars, and excursions.

Prices start at €160 per night, depending on season and availability.

A minimum two-night stay applies; in July and August, the minimum stay is usually three nights.
