THE SETTING

Château du Gué aux Biches sits on a hill just outside Bagnoles-de-l’Orne, surrounded by 13 hectares of private parkland and the great Andaines Forest beyond. It is only a short distance from town, but the atmosphere changes quickly: the lake, casino, thermal baths and Belle Époque villas of Bagnoles feel close, while the château itself feels wonderfully removed.

The house has a strong connection to the town’s history. Albert Christophle, an important political figure in 19th-century France and one of the men behind the development of Bagnoles as a spa destination, bought the property in 1868 as a hunting lodge. His son later remodelled and expanded the château in 1907–1908, giving it much of the Belle Époque character it still carries today.

That sense of history is part of the pleasure here. The château does not feel like a hotel trying to imitate the past; it feels like a house where the past has been carefully brought back into use. Period furniture, old volumes, salons, terraces, forest views and the surrounding park all create a mood that is elegant but not stiff.

The setting also gives the property a slightly unusual place within Normandy. This is not the coastal Normandy of beaches and ports, but the greener, quieter south: spa town, forest paths, cycling routes, bocage countryside, thermal water and slow days outdoors.

THE ROOMS

The château has three superior rooms and two suites, all located in the main house. Each one is named after a figure connected to the history of the château or Bagnoles-de-l’Orne: Albert Christophle, Alexandre Dumas, Marie Laurencin, Paul Féval and Sophie Herminde de Lepinay.

The rooms look out onto the park or forest, with large beds that can usually be arranged as twins, private bathrooms, tea and coffee facilities, Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobes, and slippers. The two suites offer more space, with private balconies and views in several directions.

There is also Maison Inès, the château’s former gardener’s house, now available as an independent residence. It is built in the same Belle Époque spirit and works well for families or small groups, with its own kitchen, living spaces, bedrooms, terraces and views towards the château grounds.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served in the dining room, or in the room on request, with croissants, baguette, local cheeses and jams, eggs, yoghurt, juice, coffee or tea, and honey from the château’s own hives.

There is no restaurant on site, which fits the rhythm of the place. Days here are more about a slow breakfast, time outside, and then heading into Bagnoles or the surrounding area for lunch and dinner. Klaus and Søren know the local tables and can help guests choose the right place, whether that means a simple bistro or a more refined dinner.

For special occasions, the château can also arrange more exclusive dining experiences with Sasja, a Danish cook with a deep love of French food culture. These dinners are built around local ingredients, markets and farms, and can be organised for intimate meals or private celebrations.

THE STAY

At Château du Gué aux Biches, the experience is as much about the grounds as the house itself. The château sits within 13 hectares of private parkland, with lawns, mature trees, quiet paths and terraces where guests can read, have a drink or simply enjoy the feeling of being away from everything. Inside, the atmosphere remains intimate and residential. Guests can enjoy the château’s shared spaces, linger over breakfast, spend time in the salons, or return in the afternoon for tea, a glass of wine, or a quiet moment after exploring the area.

There is no heavy hotel infrastructure here — no spa, no large restaurant, no unnecessary extras. The pleasure is simpler and more elegant: the park, the house, the views, the hosts’ recommendations, and the rare feeling of staying in a private château.

AROUND THE PLACE

Bagnoles-de-l’Orne is one of the most distinctive small towns in Normandy. It is known for its thermal baths, lake, casino, Belle Époque quarter and forest setting. From the château, the town centre is close enough for an easy visit, while the surrounding nature gives the stay a much slower rhythm.

The Andaines Forest is one of the main reasons to come. It stretches across thousands of hectares and is crossed by walking and cycling routes, making the area especially good for guests who want fresh air, forest paths and active days without needing anything too extreme. The region has also been developing strongly around outdoor tourism, with a large network of marked trails for walking, running and cycling.

Golfers have another advantage: the Bagnoles-de-l’Orne golf course is only a short distance from the château gates. The lake, spa, market, restaurants and cafés of the town are also easy to reach.

THE OWNERS

Château du Gué aux Biches is the story of Klaus and Søren. Originally from Denmark, they had long shared a dream of moving to France, finding the right château and creating a guesthouse that felt both beautiful and welcoming.

They first visited Gué aux Biches in 2016, bought it in 2017, and moved to France permanently in August 2020. Before that, their lives were very different — Klaus worked as an equity trader, while Søren had a political background. The move to Bagnoles was not a small adjustment; it was a full change of life. The result is rare: a grand place that does not feel distant. You are not one guest among many. You are staying in Klaus and Søren’s house.

GOOD TO KNOW

There are three superior rooms, two suites and one independent residence, Maison Inès. The château is surrounded by 13 hectares of private parkland and sits close to the Andaines Forest, the golf course, the thermal town of Bagnoles-de-l’Orne and its lake.

There is no on-site restaurant, but private dining experiences can be arranged on request, and the hosts can recommend nearby restaurants.

Rates start at €200 per night for a superior room, including breakfast. Suites at €245 per night. A two-night minimum stay applies for the rooms and suites. Maison Inès is rented separately and is especially suited to families or small groups.
