Méthamis is well placed for discovering a quieter, hillier part of Provence. The village sits near the Gorges de la Nesque, one of the most beautiful routes in the area, with limestone cliffs, viewpoints and a road that cyclists know well. It is not an easy little Sunday ride, but it is a memorable one.
Mont Ventoux is the big reference nearby. For cyclists, it is almost a pilgrimage; for everyone else, it is still worth the drive for the views, the landscape and that strange white summit that looks different from almost anywhere in the Vaucluse.
Sault is a good direction for lavender in season, while the Dentelles de Montmirail bring another side of the region: vineyards, limestone ridges, walking paths and villages such as Gigondas, Beaumes-de-Venise and Séguret. Wine tasting fits naturally into a stay here, especially if you like Rhône Valley reds.
For markets and village days, Carpentras, Pernes-les-Fontaines, Venasque, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and Bédoin are all worth keeping in mind. Gordes and Roussillon are possible too, but Le Pavadou is better suited to travellers who do not need every day to be a greatest-hits tour of Provence.
