THE SETTING

La Perroya is a four-room guesthouse in the old village of Visan, in the Enclave des Papes, a small pocket of Vaucluse surrounded by the Drôme Provençale. The location is quietly excellent: Vaison-la-Romaine, Nyons and Grignan are all within easy reach, with vineyards, stone villages and lavender country close by. The house sits in the historic centre, with the church square on one side and a private inner courtyard on the other.

La Perroya feels like a real village house, restored by someone with a strong eye. The interiors are layered with old furniture, textiles, books, travel objects and family pieces gathered by Agathe Perroy over many years. The charm comes from the mix: Provence, antiques, India, Africa, Brazil, old linens, painted walls, stone stairs, church bells and light moving through the rooms.
This is a good address for travellers who like small houses with personality, village life, wine country and a slower Provence away from the busiest routes.

THE ROOMS

The four rooms are set between the first and second floors. There are three double rooms and one larger suite. Some rooms look over the church square, while others face the courtyard or the countryside beyond the village. Each room has its own decorative theme, shaped by Agathe’s objects and memories. Expect old tomettes, linen sheets, carefully chosen wallpapers, antique mirrors, restored furniture, books, paintings and small pieces brought back from travels. All the rooms are equipped with ceiling fans, and the thick village-house walls help keep the atmosphere cooler in warm months.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is usually served in the courtyard when the weather allows. The mulberry plane tree gives shade, the saltwater basin sits nearby, and the old village feels close without being busy. The breakfast is generous and local: bread, pastries, fruit, homemade or regional products, coffee, tea and whatever makes sense that morning.

In cooler weather, breakfast moves indoors to the large table in the living room. That room is one of the nicest parts of the house: fireplace, library, old pieces, quiet corners and enough space to sit a little longer before heading out.

La Perroya can also organise an apéritif-dînatoire or a more intimate table d’hôtes experience on request, featuring local products and natural wines. It is worth asking in advance, especially if you prefer a first evening at the house rather than driving out again after arrival.

THE STAY

The house is arranged around a shaded inner courtyard, with a small saltwater basin for cooling off in warm weather. It measures around seven metres by one metre, so it is more of a refreshing plunge basin than a swimming pool.

From the first floor, a footbridge leads to a large panoramic terrace. This is the place for late afternoon, when the heat softens, and the view opens towards the Rhône Valley. Bring a book, a drink, or nothing at all. Inside, the living room gives the house a winter side too. The fireplace, library and large table make La Perroya feel comfortable outside the usual Provence summer season.

AROUND LA PERROYA

Visan is a good base for discovering the northern Vaucluse and Drôme Provençale. The village has old lanes, ramparts, historic buildings and several walks starting directly from the centre, with views over vineyards, the plain and Mont Ventoux.

Vaison-la-Romaine is one of the easiest day trips, with Roman ruins, a medieval upper town, markets and restaurants. Nyons brings olive oil, lavender, Provençal arcades and a more Drôme-like rhythm. Grignan is also close, with its château, stone streets and summer cultural life.
The surrounding countryside is strong for wine. You are in the Côtes du Rhône world here, with villages such as Valréas, Richerenches, Rasteau, Cairanne and Suze-la-Rousse within reach. Richerenches is especially known for truffles in season.

Mont Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail and the Baronnies Provençales can all shape longer days out, depending on your mood. You can keep the trip very local — village, market, wine, terrace — or use La Perroya as a quiet base for a broader itinerary in Provence.
Agathe shares restaurant recommendations and local tips with guests, including addresses in Visan, Venterol, Richerenches and Vaison-la-Romaine.

THE OWNERS

La Perroya is run by Agathe Perroy, an interior architect who opened the house to guests in 2021. The decoration carries pieces from her travels, family objects, antique finds, fabrics, books and artworks. Some details are personal, some playful, some more refined. Together, they give La Perroya the feeling of a house with memory.

Agathe’s hospitality follows the same line: discreet, warm and rooted in the village. She knows the area well and can help with restaurants, visits, wine, markets and the small practical details that make a stay smoother.

GOOD TO KNOW

The house is arranged across several levels, and the saltwater basin is unprotected, so families with very young children should check suitability before booking.
The house is in the historic centre of Visan. Agathe recommends following the signs for “Vieux Village” and “Église” rather than relying fully on GPS, as some lanes inside the ramparts are very narrow. Free public parking is available nearby, around 200 metres from the house.

Rates usually start at around €120 per night, depending on the room and season. The full house can also be rented privately from around €420 per night for extended weekends, or from around €2,500 per week in summer and mid-season.
