The most immediate walk leads towards Erbonne, just across the border in Italy. The route follows old paths used for years by villagers and smugglers, crossing the landscape where family ties, trade and survival once mattered more than the official line on the map.
Monte Generoso is the main mountain. Its summit reaches 1,704 metres and can be reached by cogwheel train from Capolago or on foot from various points, depending on the route and weather. From the top, the view stretches across Lake Lugano, the Po Plain, the Alps and, on clear days, much further than expected.
Bruzella, Cabbio, Muggio, and the smaller villages lower in the valley are worth exploring. This is a landscape of stone houses, chestnut woods, narrow lanes and old agricultural terraces rather than famous monuments. Mendrisio, Chiasso, Lake Lugano and even Como can all be reached for day trips, although the real reason to stay here is to remain in the valley.
The best advice is simple: bring good shoes, ask Claudio before choosing a route, and do not underestimate the valley just because it sits close to towns and borders.
