THE SETTING

Hotel Zeit & Traum sits in Beatenberg, high above Lake Thun and around 20 minutes from Interlaken. From this side of the mountain, the view opens across the lake towards the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Beatenberg is sometimes called the sun terrace of the Bernese Oberland. It is quieter than Interlaken, less polished than the big lake hotels and much more about the view, the air and the easy access to the Niederhorn.

Zeit & Traum is a very particular hotel. It is not trying to be a classic Swiss chalet or a discreet design address. The idea is more playful: ten large suites, ten different worlds, each with its own private wellness area. Guests come here to close the door, stay in the room, use the sauna, sit in the whirlpool, order food in and watch the mountains from the balcony or terrace.

The hotel is small, personal and made for short escapes. It works especially well for couples who want privacy, comfort and something more memorable than another standard mountain room.

THE ROOMS

There are ten suites, all individually designed and much larger than a normal hotel room. Each one has a private whirlpool and sauna, either inside the suite or on the balcony or terrace. The themes are direct and easy to understand: Chalet Alpenglut, Château d’amour, Bounty Beach, Route 66, Massai Lodge, Nordstern, Japanese Garden, Maharadscha Palace, Viva México and Glanz & Glamour.

Some suites are more alpine, like Chalet Alpenglut, with warm wood, a private sauna and views from the whirlpool across Lake Thun. Others lean fully into their atmosphere: Route 66 has a motorcycle in the room, Japanese Garden has a large terrace and a low bed, and Viva México comes with a huge terrace, kitchen, sauna house and hotpot.

The point is not subtle decoration. It is immersion. Each suite has its own mood, objects, colours and layout, and guests choose the one that fits the kind of stay they want. Sizes range from around 38 to 76 m². Some suites have large terraces or balconies, while others focus more on the interior space and mountain views. All suites include bathrobes, slippers, complimentary minibar drinks, snacks, sweets, fruit, tea and coffee. Most beds are close to 2 x 2 metres, with some round beds depending on the suite.

THE FOOD

Breakfast is served in the room. The evening before, guests choose what they want from a breakfast list and leave it outside the door. In the morning, a chilled breakfast basket is placed at the suite from 8:30am, so there is no fixed breakfast time to follow. Hot dishes such as eggs, bacon or toast can be ordered by phone and brought to the room. Vegan options are available.

On the day of arrival, a cold platter with local cheese, meat and bread is included in the room rate, together with a welcome bottle of Prosecco, Asti or Rimuss, plus one bottle of red wine and one bottle of white wine. Guests who prefer a hot dinner can order one in advance for an extra charge.

Food can also be ordered on the following days, either as a cold platter or a hot dish. Everything is brought to the suite, so meals can be taken at the table, on the balcony, or beside the whirlpool, if the room allows.

THE STAY

The stay is built almost entirely around the room. Each suite has its own sauna and whirlpool, so there is no shared spa timetable, no corridors lined with bathrobes, and no need to book a treatment slot unless you want a massage.

The minibar, snacks and drinks are included, and the team can help with decorations, flowers or a birthday cake for special occasions. It is very much a celebration hotel, but also works for anyone who simply wants a private break with a big view.

AROUND ZEIT & TRAUM

Beatenberg gives you the Bernese Oberland without sleeping in the middle of Interlaken.

The Niederhorn is the local mountain and one of the easiest excursions from the hotel. In summer, it offers hiking, wildlife watching, paragliding and wide views over Lake Thun and the Alps. In winter, it is useful for sledging, snowshoeing, winter walking, and small-scale skiing. The St. Beatus Caves are also close by, above the northern shore of Lake Thun. The cave system is one of the classic local visits, with waterfalls, limestone formations and views back across the lake.

Interlaken is around 20 minutes away by car. From there, days can stretch towards Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren or the Jungfraujoch. Lake Thun is worth a visit too. The boat route connects villages and castles along the shore, including Spiez, Oberhofen and Thun. On a clear day, the lake view from Beatenberg explains very quickly why people stay up here instead of down in town.

For a softer day, walk from the hotel to one of the nearby viewpoints and come back before sunset. That may be enough.

THE OWNERS

Hotel Zeit & Traum is led by Dominik, who took over the hotel after years of wanting to run a place like this.

The daily experience is supported by Bea, Maria, Petra and the wider team. The service is warm and direct. Guests are left alone when they want privacy, but the team is close enough to help with food, restaurant reservations, excursions, arrival details and special requests. Eager to share the region’s wonders, they are devoted to curating activities and experiences that embrace its natural beauty – one of Switzerland’s most stunning locations.

GOOD TO KNOW

Each of the ten suites has a private whirlpool and sauna, either inside the room or on the balcony or terrace. Breakfast is served in the room by basket. A cold cheese-and-meat platter with bread is included upon arrival, along with selected drinks.

Children are welcome. Dogs are accepted only in Route 66 and Viva México, with prior notice and an additional cleaning fee. Free parking is available around the hotel. An electric-car charging station can be reserved in advance for an extra charge.

Rates range from CHF 460 to CHF 660 depending on the suite and date.
