Vecchia Dogana is a boutique guesthouse in Astano, housed in a late 19th-century villa built as a customs house on the border of Italy. Surrounded by over 300 km of walking trails in the “Toscana del Ticino” region, the historic former customs house offers peaceful relaxation beside the swimming pond and hillside greenery. The quiet location provides the perfect backdrop for guests seeking immersion in natural beauty.
The guesthouse features five charming rooms—four spacious doubles (two with an extra bed for children) and one single room—totaling nine adult and two child beds. None of the rooms has en-suite bathrooms; guests share two WC/shower combinations and one separate WC per floor. Linen sheets, honeycomb towels, bathrobes, and cloth table linens underscore the property’s thoughtful approach to comfort and sustainability.
Guests gather for breakfast in a bright ground‑floor room that opens onto a large furnished garden. The buffet celebrates local produce and seasonal flavours, with homemade jams and cakes, yogurt, cheese and eggs from nearby farms, organic honey, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and herbal infusions—all available throughout the day.
Facilities include a welcoming garden with barbecue, outdoor shower, loungers, and seating within a biodiverse setting. There’s also a fully equipped communal kitchen on the first floor, and meals can be prepared using the kitchen area. Pets are welcome, and there are three parking places on the property.
Guests can make the most of the abundant outdoor trails, nearby swimming pond, and peaceful surroundings—ideal for hiking, biking, or simply reconnecting with nature. The property is open from March to November and offers the Ticino Ticket, which allows free use of public transport and discounts on tourist attractions, making it easy to take excursions to nearby lakes, scenic mountain villages, and local markets throughout the region.
Owned and run by Elisabetta Lazzaroni and her partner, Vecchia Dogana is their dream project. This lovingly restored customs house reflects their art, film production, and visual culture backgrounds. With eco-conscious restoration, second-hand design furnishings, and deeply considered hospitality, they offer a stay rooted in tranquillity and genuine connection to Ticino’s landscape and soul.
