THE STORY

Perched in the green heights of Cassina Valsassina, just inland from the shores of Lake Como, Maso Zambo is the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you arrive. Tucked between chestnut forests and mountain pastures at around 800 metres above sea level, yet only about an hour from Milan, it offers a magical escape into the rhythms of nature and mountain life.

Maso Zambo’s offers just two guest rooms, making every stay feel deeply private and intentional. Named with minimalist elegance, the rooms “M” and “Z” open onto views of the Valsassina valley, framing the mountains and forests like living artworks. Inside, design is pared back yet warm: natural light spills over wooden floors, soft textiles, and calming neutral tones, while large windows bring the wild landscape right into your field of view.

Breakfast at Maso Zambo is rooted in simplicity and seasonality: fresh bread, yoghurt, eggs from the farm, homemade jams and good coffee, all enjoyed slowly with mountain views. But food here goes far beyond the morning table. In the intimate on-site restaurant, guests are invited to let go of decisions and trust Stefano. Skip the effort of choosing and let him guide you through the day’s four-course menu, paired with wines carefully selected by the Maso. It’s honest, personal cooking — shaped by the garden, the land, and the rhythm of the mountains.

Beside the garden is a wellness spa with a cedarwood sauna — the perfect complement to long walks in the mountain woods. There’s also an outdoor fire pit for evening conversation under the stars, and the garden and pastureland feel like extensions of your room, beckoning you to sit, read, nap or watch clouds drift by.

Out here, nature is your playground. Lace up your boots and explore forest trails under conifer canopies, stroll through pastures dotted with walnuts, apples and figs, or follow scenic mountain roads that unfold views of the Grigne and Orobie Pre-Alps. A short drive brings you to Lake Como’s picture-postcard villages like Varenna or Bellagio, where lakeside walks, boat rides and café terraces await.

Maso Zambo is the vision of Stefano Zambon, a Milanese by birth who chose to leave city life and pour his time, passion and creativity into this farm-based refuge. Stefano’s journey from corporate life to countryside host is reflected everywhere: the farmhouse revival was painstaking and personal, blending original character with gentle contemporary design and deep respect for the landscape. His warmth and thoughtful hospitality give this mountain lodge its beating heart, making every guest feel like a welcomed friend rather than a visitor.
