THE STORY

Il Borgo del Balsamico is a boutique B&B in Emilia-Romagna, outside Reggio Emilia, in the village of Botteghe di Albinea. It’s a rare mix: part elegant countryside escape, part living piece of local food culture, because the “Borgo” is also home to an antica acetaia where Balsamic Vinegar is patiently aged the traditional way. The atmosphere is quietly romantic—historic buildings, a century-old park, and the kind of place where the days naturally slow down as soon as you arrive.

The hospitality side is called Le Dimore del Borgo, with rooms set across the Countryhouse and the Villa, designed for travellers who want charm with comfort rather than a standard hotel feel. The overall tone is warm and personal—more “staying in someone’s beautiful home” than a formal boutique hotel.

Breakfast is part of the Borgo’s slow rhythm—enjoyed with the park in view. A lovely extra is built into the stay: your room rate includes a visit to the acetaia for a tasting, so you don’t just try the balsamic—you actually understand what makes it special and why time is the main ingredient here.

The star is a secular park with 19th-century garden architecture, topiary box hedges, rare and monumental trees, and flower beds that go big in spring and summer. Roses are a recurring theme—pergolas and fragrant pathways that make wandering the garden feel like its own little ritual—and there’s also an Italian-style garden framing a greenhouse and a small pool area tucked into an orchard of old fruit varieties.

Staying here naturally comes with a food-and-wine focus. Emilia-Romagna is widely seen as Italy’s ultimate foodie region—the birthplace of some of the country’s most famous staples, from Parmigiano Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma to traditional Balsamic Vinegar, ragù alla bolognese, and fresh egg pasta such as tortellini and tagliatelle. It’s a place where food isn’t a “theme”; it’s culture rooted in craft, time, and generations of know-how.

Il Borgo del Balsamico is run by sisters Cristina and Silvia, and the project feels deeply personal: they built the company in the 2000s on a family tradition that goes back decades, with a clear commitment to craft, coherence, and sustainability—using natural raw materials and avoiding additives, preservatives and colourings. Today, they don’t just produce and age Balsamic Vinegar in hundreds of barrels; they also open their world to guests, sharing a beautiful home, a living tradition, and a very Emilian sense of hospitality.
