THE STORY

Fowlescombe Farm is a quietly luxurious farm stay in Devon, England, set in a tucked-away valley in the foothills of Dartmoor National Park, with the wild South Devon coast within easy reach. It’s not a “hotel with a bit of countryside around it” — it’s a working, regenerative farm that happens to have ten beautifully designed suites, so your days naturally orbit the land, the animals, and whatever the weather is doing. Arriving already feels like a reset: lanes get narrower, phone signal fades, and suddenly you’re in a pocket of rolling fields and woodland where time stretches out.

The farm is made up of ten suites across converted stone barns and a Victorian farmhouse, with a look that’s clean and warm rather than “country cute”: oak, local stone, thoughtful textures, and big windows framing meadow, orchard or valley views. Comfort is taken seriously — expect generous bathrooms and the kind of details that make outdoor life easy (the farm is known for having wellies and raincoats ready when Devon does its classic “mizzle”). Some suites also include their own kitchens, which makes longer stays feel especially effortless.

Food is the heartbeat here. Stays are designed around a full-board flow — long breakfasts, a light lunch, afternoon cake in the farmhouse, and an evening meal that becomes the highlight of the day. Dinner is a daily-changing four-course set menu in the Refectory, created by chef Elly Wentworth and shaped by what’s abundant on the farm and in the gardens at the moment.

Fowlescombe makes it easy to be as active (or as still) as you want. On-site, you can slip into the farm’s rhythm with hosted tours, feeding animals, bread-making sessions, yoga (often in the greenhouse), tastings, and seasonal, hands-on workshops — or simply wander the estate’s trails and find your own quiet spot. Off-site, Dartmoor delivers big skies, tors and moorland walks, while the South Devon coastline pulls you toward beaches, cliff paths and fishing villages for a completely different kind of day out.

Fowlescombe Farm is led by Caitlin Owens and her partner Paul Glade, alongside Caitlin’s family, with a clear intention: keep it a real working farm first, and build the guest experience around that — not the other way around. The result feels personal and grounded, with hospitality that’s warm and unforced, and a genuine sense that you’re being welcomed into a place that has purpose beyond “a nice weekend away.”
