Follonico is a small boutique agriturismo, located in an 18th-century farmhouse just outside the hilltop village of Montefollonico, in the southern Tuscan countryside. Set within seven hectares of countryside, you’re right in that “postcard zone” between Montepulciano, Pienza and the Val d’Orcia, with vineyards, olive groves and cypress-lined hills unfolding in every direction. It’s the kind of place you choose when you want Tuscany to feel real: slow mornings, long light, and a base that makes you happy to come back early.
Accommodation is intentionally limited, with four suites and two rooms, all restored with respect for the old farmhouse and finished with a relaxed, “rustic-meets-modern” eye. Expect exposed beams, antique details and natural materials, paired with contemporary comfort so it never feels heavy or old-fashioned. Each space is different, but the feeling stays consistent: private, cosy, and designed for deep sleep after a day of Tuscan wandering.
Breakfast at Follonico is built around local products and homemade touches. Good bread, seasonal fruit, cakes, and the kind of simple, well-made plates that make you linger at the table. You also taste the estate itself: their own olive oil—what the family calls their “green gold”—and, at times, small-batch wines from the vineyard. That same “what the earth gives today” philosophy continues beyond breakfast. Follonico’s kitchen is intentionally simple and sincere, rooted in Tuscan tradition, with no à la carte menu—the dishes change daily depending on what’s in season.
Follonico is perfectly placed for the classics – Montepulciano, Pienza, and the Val d’Orcia. Still, it also encourages a slower Tuscany: small wineries, farm shops, scenic drives with no real destination, and long lunches in villages where nothing feels staged. Come back for a swim, a book under the trees, then head out again for dinner (there are well-loved local spots nearby). It’s an ideal base if your Tuscany dream is more “taste and atmosphere” than checklist sightseeing.
Follonico is the project of Suzanne & Fabio, who left their busy lives in Rome in 2006 and stumbled upon this abandoned Tuscan farmhouse near Montefollonico. They restored it slowly and thoughtfully, then opened the doors in 2009 as an extension of their own home, shaping Follonico around what they love most: simple beauty, countryside rhythm, and warm, personal hospitality.
