Adega do Fogo is a luxurious holiday home in Santa Luzia on Pico Island. This meticulously restored 200-year-old property, once a distillery, is nestled within the UNESCO World Heritage-designated Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture. It offers guests breathtaking views of Mount Pico, Portugal’s highest peak, steps away from the Atlantic Ocean. 

The estate features six elegantly appointed rooms, each designed to blend historic charm with modern comfort. Original architectural elements, such as restored ceiling beams and stone window surrounds, were preserved to maintain the property’s authentic character. Each room provides direct access to a shared balcony at the front of the main building.

At Adega do Fogo, guests can enhance their stay with personalized culinary experiences. Upon request, skilled local chefs can prepare traditional Azorean meals, which can be enjoyed in the dining room or outdoors using the wood-fired oven and barbecue facilities. A heated saltwater infinity pool offers refreshing swims with stunning views of Mount Pico. A sauna constructed from cryptomeria wood provides a rejuvenating experience for wellness enthusiasts. The estate also includes a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room, and a cozy living area in the former distillery, where original artifacts have been preserved to showcase the building’s historical significance. 

From November to February, the restored distillery becomes operational, allowing guests to participate in the traditional production of aguardente (a type of brandy) using local fruits such as Pico bananas, pineapple, strawberry, and sweet potato. Additional experiences include traditional cornbread workshops, personalized massages with essential oils derived from native plants, and guided tours of the island’s renowned vineyards. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the island through bike rides and hiking trails, with the option to arrange whale-watching excursions. 

Inspired by the property’s unique energy and historical significance, Benedita Branco brought the vision behind Adega do Fogo to life. She embarked on restoring this abandoned distillery to preserve its legacy and share the rich traditions of Pico with guests. Her dedication to maintaining the property’s authenticity while providing modern luxuries ensures a memorable and immersive experience for all who visit.
