THE STORY

The first recorded settlers carved rocks some 30,000 years ago. Neanderthals and Homo sapiens lived here until the former disappeared. The Celts conquered these lands that would later pass into the hands of the Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, and Christians. A mixture of cultures that today is the hallmark of northern Portugal. And that, to a large extent, it shares with Galicia.

Come to the fortresses that lived through the wars with Castile centuries ago, after which the Portuguese Empire spread to Brazil, India, and Africa. The O Geres National Park is now the border.

EAT & DRINK

To start, a board of pork sausages as an appetizer with Port wine. Afterward, the most peculiar thing you can eat here is the green broth, a cabbage, and potato stew for vegetable lovers. The cod is obtained from the coast, and the trout from the rivers. Later, the kid with rice in the oven is a mandatory dish here. For dessert, the Pao de Ló de Margaride sponge cake, whose recipe is secret.

In desserts, we again recommend accompanying them with Porto wine. The wineries of the Duero Valley are a claim for the beauty of their vineyards and the guided tours and tastings. Good food, good wine, and bread for the road.

unexpected plans

In the middle of the Douro Valley is Pinhao, a small town among vineyards, a landscape similar to Tuscany. After a winding stretch of road around the slopes of the mountains, there is the San Salvador du Mondo viewpoint. A special photo!

Miranda do Douro will reveal to you a medieval territory. In addition, on a cruise through the Douro River, you will be able to admire the canyons and cliffs that the river has formed in its path, as well as the native vultures. Tour the beautiful landscapes of this region so forgotten by nationals and foreigners. The panoramic perspective of the Fraga do Puio viewpoint, with a glass walkway, is the best spot.
