THE STORY

Mingary Castle, one of Scotland’s most unique restaurants with rooms, stands proudly on a picturesque promontory at the edge of Scotland’s west coast, nestled within the Ardnamurchan Estate. This 13th-century castle, painstakingly restored to its former glory in 2016 and further enhanced in 2021, offers a regal vantage point with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean from its original battlements. From this dramatic and windswept location, Mingary Castle presents an unparalleled luxury experience within a fortress steeped in Scottish history.

Within the castle, guests can revel in luxury and historical elegance through its four meticulously crafted suites, each named after Scottish clans with historical ties to the castle. The crowning jewel of each suite is the magnificent hand-carved four-poster bed adorned with handcrafted Scottish wool blankets, plush goose-feathered pillows, and duvets. Every suite is thoughtfully designed to provide a distinct and immersive stay, seamlessly merging the ancient charm of the castle with modern comforts.

Overseeing the two AA rosette restaurant is chef patron Colin Nicholson. The restaurant offers an intimate dining experience with a 20-cover dining room, where guests can savor a five or eight-course tasting menu. The daily changing menu spotlights the finest produce from the region. Locally sourced ingredients abound, with fruits, vegetables, and herbs harvested from the community garden, fish procured from Tobermory Fish Co and Iain Stewart’s in Fort William, and Highland-based Great Glen Charcuterie prominently in the cured meats. Even the sausages for breakfast are homemade, crafted from pork supplied by a local farmer. Jessica has thoughtfully curated the drinks menu and wine list, including Scottish-sourced gins and a wide array of whiskies from across the country, spanning the Highlands, Lowlands, and even the Ardnamurchan estate’s distillery.

Mingary Castle’s splendid location lends itself well to various outdoor activities. Guests can rent bicycles and explore the breathtaking local landscapes, from nearby coastlines to picturesque countryside. The castle is also an excellent starting point for hiking adventures in the surrounding Scottish terrain.

At the helm of this remarkable establishment are two seasoned hospitality professionals, chef Colin Nicholson and business partner Jessica Thompson, who are dedicated to establishing the castle as a prominent fixture on Scotland’s culinary map. They are more than happy to assist guests in arranging various tours and excursions to discover the wonders of this enchanting region in the West Highlands.
